Hi there,
I have seen a lot of posts here of people being on a diet to get a six-pack or abs. My queston is do you have to be on a diet to get abs? or is exercising and eating healthy all you need? Also I am 14 years old is there any way I can get abs? Or does it take a certain age for the abs to show?Thank you

Everbody has abs. The only way to build this muscle is to work them out so they get larger. Many people have very large abs but they are not visible due to a layer of fat covering them. To reduce this fat proper diet and cardio such as running (not jogging), skipping rope, cycling (not joy riding) or swimming (lengths not sitting in the hot tub or lolly gagging with buddies).

Thanks for reading and replying, but do you know what you have to eat on that diet? I would really appreciate it if you could tell me of a website where it tells you what foods you have to eat for that diet.Thank you

Anyone with common sense knows what is good and what is bad to eat, just most of us cant resist . Since you are 14, just eat regular healthy foods, nothing special. Keeps them abs working everyday (don't kill them everyday, one day hard, one day soft). You can do 100,000,000,000,000 sit ups but without the proper eating habits you will not get a "six-pack".

Good rule of thumb when in doubt about eating right, don't stuff and don't starve.

This is a good rule. You want to make sure you eat enough so you can function but never eat till you are full. Eating till you are full means that you will more then likely deposit that extra to fat unless you can burn it off.

Counting calories is boring and I would not suggest it especially being young ... but as a frame of reference the average person in fit condition should take their weight and times it by 20 and that is how many calories per day they need to maintain that weight and to function. Cutting calories from that will lead to getting smaller. Adding calories will gain you weight ... and if weight lifting you will want to increase it anywhere from 100 to 600 more calories depending on how big you are.

Again don't count calories at this time as it is not needed. Just eat sensibly and try to eliminate too many fatting foods ... the bad kind of fatty foods ... not the fatty foods that contain Omega 3,6,9. And if you would like, incorporate a 5 to 6 meal a day eating plan. What ever you need to maintain your body divide that up into 5 to 6 portions so that your body can use the fuel (food) more efficiently throughout the day. AND drink plenty of water ... this is really good for you.

Note: Being young your metabolism may be very high and you may not even have to worry about this now. Live life and enjoy it and just do things sensibly now so that later in life you have a good template. If you eat badly now then this habit will be extremely hard to break when you are older and many at that time just give up and accept they are overweight and continue to put on the pounds. A good template now allows you to have control in your life later because eating properly will be a good habit.

I think you may find it easier to get more size and definition in your body once you get older due to higher testosterone levels. But staying away from high amounts of saturated fat and hi GI carbs may help you lose some fat. Eating more protein and splitting your meals into 5-6 meals daily can increase your metabolism. Oh, don't forget to eat your fruits and veggies at least 1 or 2 servings of fruits or vegetables a meal.

So basically everything that your mom told you (ok my mom too) about "eating your vegetables and fruit is correct. I found out that after i was diagnosed with ADHD that caffiene and salt made things very difficult on me. Now i'm not saying that i don't have my bouts of "OMG i want a snickers" becuase i do, i just don't allow very many of them in my diet. (the cravings for them pretty much have gone away except about once a month.) I also lost close to 4 lbs when i stopped drinking soda, caffiene free too. (the syrup and carbination used in soda is very hard for your body to process and the carbination is see as a toxin and has to be processed by the liver. Crazy stuff i found out.) I don't drink tea, coffee, hot cocoa or any energy drink either...makes the body too hyped up then it stores the bad stuff to mantain control while it calms down.

The 5-6 meals works great becuase then your body knows it's going to get constant nurishment and won't hold on to the junk you try to burn just to make it to the next meal. But i also think that a great diet is listening to what your body wants and what it processes easily and effectively. Don't skimp on the occasional craving because then the body tends to gourge when the opportunity arises.
