this may be an odd question, but what is the etiquette for tipping the sushi chef if you get a carryout order? I put a dollar in his tip jar, is that okay or is it more related to the amount of money you spend like a regular server tip?

etiquette for which country? In Japan it's kindof an insult (but then again, there wouldn't be a can there). In the US, tips are part of servers calculated salary. but for carryout, it's not expected.

a tip can next to a sushi bar? lol sounds kinda rediculous. but it wouldn't surprize me too much if I saw that in the US.

Yeah its in the US. Ohio specifically. The tip can is right on the sushi bar next to each chef. lol its odd because this restaurant is by far the best japanese/sushi place in the city, and is very authentic. Its the one chock full of Japanese couples on the weekends, so I take that as a good sign.

I'll make sure to save my dollar the next time =)

I don't know about suhi bars, but a disgruntled russian waiter once told me, "a tip is 10%, not a joke".

As Brits don't tip habitually (unlike our American cousins) I'd imagine he got the idea from US influence. I still use it as a guideline.

10% would be small tip in my neck of the woods. It seems they expect 20% now.

Sad thing about it was thatit was a mistake. I had six currencies in my pocket and was going to tip him in something like Deutsch Marks or Finnmarks (rather than Estonian Kroons). I was just sorting through what I had and he saw the small amount of kroons on the table and said, "I don't need that, a tip is 10%, not a joke."

Well, he got nothing after that. In fact 15 minutes later I was still so mad that I returned to the restaurant, walked upto him in the middle of the floor and told him what the situation was... he still got nothing.

20%! maybe they should get a job with some wages attached!
