Hi,
wondered if anyone could help/ advise
I broke my heel bone in a freak accident 18 months ago, I have just had a second op on it to straighten the foot due to damage to the sub talar joint, so I now have 2 pins in the front and 2 in the back and have been told that in the future I will need another op to fuse 3 joints in the rear of the foot, but not the ankle.
Has anyone had this op and still trains?
Does anyone have any ideas how I can take the weight off the bone structures to prolong usage but still train.
would Tai Chi help? up to the accident I was training in karate

A low impact martial art like Tai Chi or perhaps Aikido may be somewhat easier on your foot than a "hard" style like karate or TKD. But you should probably heed your medical advisor's advice as far as what type of training you should and when to start back.

I snapped my middle meta-tarsal bone in my right foot in a pretty devastating way during kumite, and your injury seems worse but I can tell you how I recovered.

First off, I stayed off it for 6 weeks at the very least. I had crutches and one of those fancy ski-boot looking braces. My very first goal was to walk right again. this was no big deal in my case because I didnt have anything fused so I didnt really lose mobility, but my foot was noticably weaker. Once I felt confident about walking and putting pressure back on the ball of my foot I started lightly doing karate again. Kata only, and even then very lightly. If I had to put all of my weight on that foot I noticed it just didnt feel right. Eventually after 3 months I worked up to full strength kata and finally back to kumite in another 3 months after that.

the mental part was harder to work through. I threw a full power forward snap kick a split second before my opponent tried to do the same. my forward moving foot met his forward moving knee with the impact area being the ball of my foot. The central long bone in the middle of my instep buckled upward and immediately every thing got cold. I tried driving home (my truck is a manual transmission) and almost passed out. Even after I fully healed I could not throw a kick with the same power. something always held me back. physically I was healed and had no pain but there was a serious mental block. After two years I feel like I'm over it, but it took many kumite sessions where I made myself throw hard kicks even though the thought of breaking my foot again made me feel sick.

the bottom line is that there wont be any better exercise for strengthening your foot than the art you intend to follow. in your case karate. light and slow kata can be just as low impact as tai chi. Dont do kicks or rough stances for a while, just go through the movements and concentrate on your foot feeling healthier. make sure to listen to your body and dont push yourself for at least 6 months to a year. recovery is slow but if you want it to be a full recovery you have to do it right

I would agree with Matt here, you are at the mercy of the specialist regarding your activity/exercise. You should be, as part of your medical care, recieving physio and physical therapy. If not, then ask your doctor why not. If you are, then take these concerns up with your physio, explaining your situation and wish to return to MA. On the point of aikido, whilst delivering the techniques would cause no problem, being a 'victim' of them would not be so hot, as before you get good at breakfalling you tend to land with a 'heel slap' very often-exactly what you need to avoid.
If the pins are being placed to fuse bone, then some years down the line they may well be removed having done their job. Whilst they are in the area will be strong and secure so with progressive rehabilitation you should be able to go back to your karate. As an example, I dont think there is one Moto GP rider who doesnt set off the detectors in airports with all the pins and bolts holding them together, yet they are all still able to hurl themselves round a track just fine.

Keep fit with activities you can do whilst limited by your foot (swimming, upper body weights etc), again, check with your medical team for confirmation and suggestion of activities.
Rehab is just another form of training, and needs aproaching with the same patience and dedication for success.

thanks for the advice guys. I had physio for 2 months before she gave it up as a bad job. My surgeon has been understanding and I gather he does work for Norwich City football club. I have tried training on three occasions and found it difficult to work for a fortnight afterwards. I am hoping the latest op will improve that and see what physio can do this time round. I was also thinking about a glucosimine chondroitin mix.
Moto GP eh Matt....now theres a thought!
