Dereck,

nice definitions.

I'll add that

white is innocence and inexperience

gold /yellow can be the colour of the earth where the seed is planted.

blue is also the sky towards which our green plant is growing.
red also signifies danger, both to the opponent and the student, who is now entering a vital time in training and may try to reach to far.

black is knowledge, impervious to fear and maturity.

There's only 5 different color belts??? I thought there was more...

there are tips in between the block colours in ITF (or ITF'ish) TKD. The styles that base the belts on the Chung Do Kwan or other early Kwans in Korea will tend to have a belt system like Shotokan Karate.

The more colors your school has, the more your instructor gets paid for;)

I will agree with this as well Earl. However I would like to bring up another point. When my Instructor was learning from his Master they had just the white, yellow, green, blue, red and black belts. But at each level you were required to do so much more in order to move on. When joining others who branched off to form their own schools they took the same format and spread it out so that people could learn each better because it was broken down and presented differently.

Now this can be looked on as bad and good. Bad because they are not required to do as much as their predecessors to obtain their belts. Good because they still do the requirements but do it in smaller steps with more belts. Bad because with more belts it means more testing which means more money. Good because many like goals and like belts and this makes it easier for them to obtain them.

For my Instructor and the others he is aligned with, they found that too many people were dropping out because they were not seeing immediate satisfaction of obtaining belts. As this is a business they had to overcome this and by introducing mid belts they were able to draw in more students and keep more.

Just thought I'd bring that up.

Trained at a few different TKD dojangs while traveling and more than one had the camouflage belt thing, must be good for hunting or Ninja's

I remember an old man once telling me the following...

Belt colours and what do they represent:

WHITE: Winter - A Snow encrusted barren landscape where growth is difficult to see.
The new practicioner must develop a will power to survive this frustrating, brief period.

YELLOW: Spring - Although the snow has thawed and growth becomes more visible, the Sun is not yet at it's zenith.
Practice every move to the best of your ability and do not rush to learn the next technique.
You have to build a strong foundation, if you want it to last.

GREEN: Summer - The Sun is at it's heighest and all things begin to flourish.
As your confidence in your abilities grows, be careful that your ego does not.

BLUE: Autumn - As the leaves fall from the trees, their branches can be see to claw towards the sky in their hunger for more.
Understand the strengths and weaknesses in all techniques and when to apply them.

RED: The Sun - You begin to soar above plant life like a bird as you begin to feel and not think your techniques.
Stay humble and keep reinforcing your foundations, lest you crash to the earth like Iccarus.

BLACK: The Void - Close your eyes. It's dark isn't it? You cannot see yourself or any one else. You are all alone.. Don't cry.
Look inwards, refine your skills, deepen your understanding, retain humility.

I gotta ask was it Jhoon Rhee, Jigaro Kano, or the guy who came up with Shotokan (I keep forgettting his name for some strange reason) who came up with the modern belt system. And I wonder what he would think about these "spiritual" meanings about a piece of cloth that use to hold your pants up, before spandex that is :P

Just food for thought.
