I have a student who holds her breath almost the sparring match. The other instructor and I have tried everything that we know to get her to breath more. Does anyone have any suggestions????

I am no expert, but i would suggest encouraging her to exhale on every technique she practises. I used to hold my breath when doing combos and it becomes really tiring. If she already does exhale sharply every technique except for when shes sparring then i am stumped

Is she a beginner?

Maybe she's scared of sparring, and therefore tenses up and holds her breath? And telling her to "Breathe!" might just tense her up more.

In any case, you might try other interactive activities that involves facing an opponent. You could, for example, have her play a bit of 1-on-1 basketball in the gym with another student (preferably one she's friendly with). See how she handles it.

If she still holds her breath, add a new "rule" to the 1-on-1. Now both of them have to fake laughing while playing. Pretty soon, they'll just end up laughing.

Do this for a few classes, while totally ignoring her non-breathing during sparring. After a while, introduce a new element while keeping the laughing rule. Now, during the laughing basketball 1-on-1 (keep using the basketball. It's used as a fun and non-threatening distraction), they're to find the opportunity to tap the other on, say, the shoulder. Again, for a couple of classes.

Next, introduce kicks. In addition to shoulder-taps, they're to sneak in a light kick or two during the game. Let them free-play a bit. No instructions, no feedback, etc., from you for that whole time. When they appear to be having lots of fun (and probably laughing themselves silly), introduce one more element: throwing aside the basketball and just going in for taps and kicks (just for a couple of moves) then dashing for the basketball again. Let them play a bit. When they appear to be really having fun, end the game.(They just might go "Awwww, coach, do we have to?"). It's important end the game while they're having fun. You want to leave them hanging, and looking forward to it on the next class.

Next class, get them to play 1-on-1 again, but this time with only an imaginary basketball. Emphasize that they must make moves that look like they're actually playing basketball with an imaginary ball. This is to keep the distraction going. She'll still be focused on the basketball moves instead of thinking about sparring. At the end of the game, compliment her/them on a game well-played.

If she can do this well-enough, next class, start off with a short game of 1-on-1 (imaginary ball), then ease into sparring by telling them, "You know what, let's forget the imaginary ball. Just go for the taps-kicks".

Then "OK, good game. Now do whatever technique comes to mind, not just the taps-kicks".

You don't have to do it just as I've laid it out, of course. Modify it where appropriate.

One bonus from this exercise is that you now have an "anchor" for when she occassonally does hold her breath again. "Emily, 1-on-1 basketball. Play basketball"

Make her kiai on every strike. Start with drills and kata and continue into contact. I had the same problem and my teacher told me you can never kiai too much - besides it will make you breathe.
