Hummmngh,
Annoying phrases/sayings...
"Yin/Yang" (Explain beyond the cliche w/o using the word)
"..... in the street......" (Yawn)
"...X kata was created for..." (you were there?)
"...ninja..." (how far from your 18th birthday are you?)
"...rice paddies..." (Prove that theory re: where its used)
"...crane..." (Hate that blasted secretive nuanced bird...)
"...shaolin/buddha..." (Prove the connection)
"...one punch kill..." (Good luck attempting that

)
Take your pick but many exist. But any of the above in almost any context are unfortunate. All of us know people who will Yin/yang us to death (literally) without being able to explain beyond that phrase. Or bring up the blasted Crane style/version/technique... why is that ALWAYS the highest secret aspects of nearly every art whether they call it Hopporen <sp.?> or by one of the many flavors of the name?

Ninja outside of a historical discussion...

Knowing with absolute certainty the historical REASON something was done, 50, 100, 1000 years ago... good luck proving that idea! Having a direct connection to a ~mythic figure~ which you cannot prove said connections...? Forcing/making a lineage connection to an art (Shaolin in this example) in order to legitimize what "I" (generic) do is tragic and unnecessary. If we cannot explain the what's and whys in contect today, what good does a vague connection to something "older" do for me?
There are lots of oddities, and word choice peeves...
