Does anyone practice holding their breath for long periods of time? I've done a little freediving, during which time I practised holding my breath, and my time up to over three minutes. I was wondering if it has other benefits or if it's practised in any systems?

ya im in swimming and we need to hold our breaths for a long time. I thank it can help you with doing tai chi but i dont know a day before a meet i do tai chi.

I'm not sure on what benefit it could offer - other than expanding your threshold. I wouldn't imagine it would be wise in a fight or during training...

To answer your question though, no we don't work on this in my Goju-Ryu class.

Here's a study saying it causes a significant increase in growth hormone and cortisol, which could enhance physical performance.
