I was wondering if anyone had a source on Sokon "Bushi" Matsumura and his real name before it was changed. I know it was supposed to have been Kiyo, but I have heard from a few that it may have been longer than that and that Kiyo was the only thing brought forward. Also, Satunuku "Tode" Sakugawa is known for teaching Matsumura. Yet there is nothing else mentioned about the Sakugawa family. Are there still Sakugawa's in Karate? Were any taught by thier reletive Tode Sakugawa?

just some blind searches...I have no idea the validity of these statements:

{scroll down to 'Stories of Matsumura'}

also, you may be able to find something here:

This is an unbelievable and expansive historical resource...but again, I have no idea of it's authenticity. If anything, it gives more places to look and prompts us to ask more questions.

good luck with your research.

Tode Sakugawa's birthname was Teryua Kanga. He was a Chikudon Peichin. When he became an official of the RyuKyu court he was given the name Sakugawa.

Bushi Matsumua was known to the Chinese as Wu Chengda. He wrote under the pen names of Unyuu and Bucho.
