I have heard that there is a form of MA that is almost purely defensive. I don't know what it is called but if it is exists I want to learn it. The idea is to somehow trick or otherwise prevent the other person from hurting you without actually hurting him. I don't see how this can be achieved but I have heard this phrase (the art of fighting without fighting) too many times to believe that it is purely coincidence. I used to think it was Jeet Kune Do, but have since discovered that Jeet Kune Do is, in fact, among the most brutal and direct of MA philosophies. Does anyone know anything about the art of fighting without fighting?

Yes. We just need someplace to practice it. We could use that island, over there......

Anpadh,
It is not so much any individual art as it is a philosophy in any art. Funikoshi said the highest form of art is to subdue the enemy without fighting. It can be as simple as saying, " I'm sorry, I was wrong" or " You're right about that, I never thought about it that way". Try it out the next time someone is angry with you or arguing, tell them "You are right about that" and see what happens.

Uuh,Yeah,I Realy don't think that'll ever work,It being several things such as the mentallity of the person or persons. You must also wonder if your potential attacker is high on meth,& if that's the case I doubt you could trick him/her from not hurting you.

Peace Out!

Well if you watch or have seen the Bruce Lee movies he tries to not fight at all in his movies until he is provoked. In many ways the "art of fighting without fighting" is trying to find ways to get your "opponent" to stop or find other ways of "fighting" them without having to use force. Once provoked or made to use force it should be used in the quickest way to disable your opponent. If somone pulls a gun or knife on you that's a different story IMO and they should be handled without predjudice.

Jeet Kune Do is only brutal if you think of it that way. Jeet kune do is not a style, it was just Bruce lee`s way of fighting. Bruce lee used no styles.

Aikido

I know there will be many jumping in saying how much technique hurt, but the ideology for many if not most/all techniques is 1st neutralization and then enough control so that they don't "have to" hurt, though they certainly can and mostly will

Plus the defensive thing

If it's not aikido you mean (even thought I'm sure it is since that phrase "fighting without fighting" is "aiki")

then it could be this one I think Vietnamese art called "36" or something like that.

Not sure on the exact numbers but I believe they taught you 36 ways of avoiding conflict and 36 ways of escaping conflict, either that or 18 and 18.

This is controversial I remember among the martial arts community because basically it was almost completely unphysical, but they defended the status as a martial art saying the goal of martial arts was self-defense and protection, and that once a conflict breaks out and becomes a "fight" even the masters could be overtaken, especially against mass multitudes of attackers. No one is "untouchable". Has anyone else heard of this art?

fighting without fighting... did you ever see Bruce Lee's enter the dragon?

Then surely you would remember when the english guy asked bruce his style bruce said, "I practice the art of fighting without fighting" then the guy says show me, the rest is history.
