Good reference Brian.
I saw a terminology listing on this site before with a few mistakes. one of the things was with 'line up'.
some dojos make the mistake of saying 'shugo' for lining up at the start and end of class.
'shugo' is used to call all people together when something is going to be explained.
'Seiretsu' means lineup by rank.
all the military stuff is kindof unnecessary anyway...but it serves to keep people focused, so I guess that side effect is worth still doing it. still, it's good to know what people are talking about even if you don't do things the same way.

Couldn't help it, I had to be the smart-aleck who hit "what is a uke?". Seriously, since I currently have no "dojo" to speak of, other than my own back yard, it doesn't really matter how much Japanese I speak.

We don't use terminology in our school, but I'm learning for visiting other schools or incase our school changes. I just don't want to have it wrong.Effective communication is what really matters to me.

I have already read that they keep the names in japanese to keep tradition, which is essential in karate, even modern or who do not accept tradition has tradition, it is inevitable. And I like the japanese names, they're so cute

Terminology page Shorin Ryu is a very good list of terms that is updated often.

Those are both to be bookmarked, thanks!
My dojo uses the word "Tanden", instead of "Hara", when referring to the abdonem - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hara_(meditation)
Joint locks and throws like ikajo, nikajo, sankajo and kote gaeshi would be nice additions, but I guess they are more in the aikijutsu realm . . .
I've started into learning Japanese - something that I meant to do a long time ago. I'm using Rosetta Stone software, and so far, I'm really impressed with their teaching methods.
