The members, that is. I found a site where we can build an interactive map of where everyone is. Check it out and put yourself on there. Let's see who's where!

I think I'm computer challenged too.

I created an account, then added myself to the FA list, but how do I place my sign on the map?

I see where the problem is...attention to detail

see where it says "optional" to create an account...?

you don't need to create an account.

You're missing the point. I can't place a sign on the map. My account is working just fine. Quit bothering me with details.

They unfortunately would not accept where I live on here ... go figure. I had to pick the closest large city which is Edmonton which is 20 minutes away. Dang thing recognizes little cities and towns around my area that are a 1/4 of our size but doesn't register us. Twits!

From the site:

Quote:

To add a shoutout, just enter your name, zipcode, and shoutout above.
Your name will only appear once on the map, but you can enter multiple shoutouts the same way

Thanks Matt but once you put "one" shoutout in it stays in. I was wondering how to edit it to get rid of one. Ed Morris is having the same problem.

That isn't fair. I have been designing an igloo community to put you all up at. We'll sit around and sing "Kum-bye Yah", chew some moose and seal jerky and I'll initiate all of you into the "Polar Club". No that isn't anything kinky with a polar bear, it's jumping into freezing waters. Get your minds out of the gutter.

Really? I could do it for you.

*checks Nikki's IP address*

I'm just kidding. I do understand about the anonymity and age issues. But if you wanted to, you could place yourself in a city nearby to be safe. On a map of the entire world, placing yourself 50 miles away doesn't affect it that much.

I added myself to Royal Oak instead of Ann Arbor, since I view AA as a more "temporary" location for school. I'll be in AA durin the school year though....till end of April when we get out!

Oh, and I didn't get the chance to post, but:

Great find MattJ! Rideonlythelabel, you ended up on the map. You live in Montreal, n'est-ce pas? (Okay, that's about as French as I'm going to get...) I included a pic of me at La Ronde trying to be funny with a jacket over my head. I can't believe I don't have a decent Karate photo of myself. I hang my head in shame.

I just did the Satellite image on that, and that is SCARY!!

I don't remember putting a complete address, but zoomed all the way up, my pin is 2 house off from where my REAL HOUSE IS!!

The place to the left with the baseball diamonds is my old elementary school...

Anyone else find that a little scary? I mean all I did was give a zip code and BAM! They got my house practically pinpointed.....

*Shudders*

That is scary! Since I don't live in the States, I didn't put in a zip code (or a postal code for that matter, just my city) and it ALMOST got me! I'd love to say where I really live, to show the difference (although I can get it down to a T) but I don't know if that's a good idea on a public forum. It was pretty freaky though! I even browsed around and managed to find my university and the malls I usually go to. Sweet!!

If you register with it you can actually move the pin to where you live(or don't live) for accuracy. Not sure if you can do it without signing up.

I just realized that you can look at the satellite pictures and zoom in.

My satellite picture is completely OFF! I can't recognize anything.

There should be a small but obvious landmark right by my house. It looks alot like the Atlantic Ocean .

Also there should be some canals where there are streets.

Satellite ain't all it's cracked up to be

Heh heh. My satellite picture won't really zoom in that close to my particular block or anything, but it does have the area right.

It zooms into the center of the area code...the larger your area code, the more off it may be. also, the satelite pictures are taken sometimes years ago. From the looks of this areas pic...looks like it was about 5 years ago. (look at large construction areas for clues)

Got myself in.

The photo is part of a series taken more than a quarter century ago intended for a book on our system.

I even had a front cover design done and wrote out (by hand, no computers then) a draft of the introductory chapter, but work got in the way and the project stopped there. When I look at the old photos and the manuscript, I cannot help but feel disappointed with myself. I've let my Sifu down.

*sigh*

Great pic! I can almost visualize the Dodge van with the "Don't come knocking if this van's a-rocking" bumper sticker!

That can't be the same guy that ate that.....that.....whatever the hell that was that you ate at the restaurant in SoCal with Butterfly et al, is it?

I think of "peace" symbols ... a cloud of narcotic smoke ... Cheech and Chong ... dude ... and yup, the Boogie Van with the mural on the side with tail pipes and large back tires ... you know the kind I remember from the old Hot Rod Magazines and the T-Shirts. Man I loved that stuff in the 70's.

Couldn't we put a link to this at the top of the Martial Arts Talk forum? It would make sense as I have been here for a few years and never seen it.

Of course, maybe I am blind and it has been there all along...note to self, pay attention to things that do not seem important.

I never go to things like that Ed, I always go to the "Who's Online" page and see what everyone is looking at, that way I can see the interesting posts. I got to the map thread by following a link from another thread.

Now that there is a new computer in front of me I have seen the map and even found myself on it. :-)
Still can't work the icons, tho. :-(

I'm added. I'm pretty much alone here, though. My closest FA buddy is in Friesland, the Netherlands, 6.6 degrees latitude and 5 degrees longitude away

OK I'm on the map. I had to put in my ZIP code otherwise it showed me living out in the middle of the bay. The pin is off by about 2 miles but that's ok.

Hey, what you should do is use the code to embed the map on this site, that way people will not have to go to Frappr to see it. You could have a special map page.It may add extra "stickyness" to the forum.

I now have high speed and I still can't get that map to come up. I even cut and pasted the Frappr site to Safari and still nothing.

Does the computer know I am a dinosaur?

I got a response from Fraper. Trey keep wanting to know when I graduated from school.
That is not what I want to ask, which is,
where is the rest of the original Fighting Arts Forum map?

I finally was able to enter it, but most of it no longer exists.

Me, too. But...
I can get New England and Canada from Hudson Bay East.
On a smaller scale I can get the US west of the Mississippi
I can also get most of Europe.
Everything else is "Image Unavailable".
And this is after a trip to the Mac shop.

The one thing about this forum, yes there's been many who have come and gone but we don't get any keyboard warriors on here which is a blessing.

There's one forum I'm on and I laugh at some of the comments etc.

There's a few where I've given up on as if Cyber bullying was a crime 80% of the members would be resting in a government run establishment

That's just because the forum members are all adults + the place has been around awhile so you could say that pretty much every subject has been discussed a little now and then.

As in, no one is ever on. They also need new moderators to help out. I'm willing to if they want a young guy that's on a lot.

Welcome

Its not that no one is ever on---its as Dobb and Mata pointed out.

The newer folks don't seem to have many questions. Kinda tough to have a discussion board without people wanting to talk.

Wish I had an answer but the traffic on most boards seem to way down from their height back in the early-mid 2000's.

It might, sadly enough, mirror the way things happen out in the real world. There are plenty of experienced people more than willing to answer questions---but not so many people that want to ask them.

Do you think it's time they need? Or they just like to lurk. There is always people looking at the stuff on here. But people just are too lazy?

I don't think its time. Does not really take that long to either read or post.

It might be a question of interaction--if I can get my questions answered without taking part in a discussian then people often do exactly that.
I have noticed that over the years some people have shown a marked tendency to treat flesh and blood people as if they were simply a sort of very specific wikipedia page. They pop in, ask questions then are never seen/heard from again.

There may have been a generational change---when this site started being able to "talk" to people from multiple systems was kinda new.Over the years though most styles and schools developed their own websites and discussion boards.

It could be that only a small percentage of people take their training seriously enough to go and seek out other opinions and POV's. In the past people have reacted very badly to having their assumptions questioned.

At one point it was kinda of "known" that site was a bad place to ignorant on. Not as harsh as bullshido or a couple of others. So I'd guess that at least "some" people don't ever come and don't want to either.

It maybe that people know more now than they did--and the folks on this site have ALOT to do with that. I would not put myself in that catagory but there are many people former and current posters that did, IMO, a TREMENDOUS job in helping people learn, were willing to passs along what they know/knew and were willing to contribute.
If I had access to site like this when I was younger I would have made far better training choices.....and would be far less combative and bitter wink

Could be that the average age of the student has been dropping steadly for over a decade. The foucs for all to many schools---for business reasons--has been on an increasingly younger demograhapic and they are less likley to on the boards.

Could be any of the above or a combo of the above or stuff that never occured to me.

Ideas?????

I would understand better if you didn't use such large words lol. Jk. tired
Martial arts isn't for the people of today. I'm young-highschool don't judge just yet. I was raised with ways of a warrior- Native American stuff. My dad taught me to be strong- mind and body. And so I realized by 6 th grade that I was stronger in all aspects than any other person in my grade and over. What I'm trying to say is that people of today are weak, martial arts is for the strong, you must endure hardships to become strong. And teenagers don't have any discipline- at all. They rather text all day instead of looking for places like this to ask questions to be a better- i mean to start their path to martial arts.
