Does anybody have any Judo books that they like? I have been looking at some of them just to learn more about this new art for me.
If you have any/know of any Judo books that have a good description/application of most of the throws, some history, tricks and tips, and training methods for improvement.........I would love to know.

Thanks

Kodokan Judo by Jigoro Kano.

itdoesn't really have tips and tricks, those u should learn from an experienced judoka. But the book is really good tool for learning and studying the names of the techniques. it also has the history and explains the principles of judo. its deffinately good to read.

1) Canon of Judo by K. Mifune
2) Kodokan Judo by J. Kano
Both are old textbook, mainly use as inspriration and for historical references. Techniques and tips mainly learned during mat time. Training method mainly from the sensei/coach.

IF you want a source on Judo, you can't go wrong with Mifune...and better yet, Kano himself.

I also hear "Best Judo" and "Judo In Action: Throwing Techniques" are very good, and I'll have them coming in the mail soon.

I got Canon of Judo not too long ago, and the "Engrish" is hard to understand sometimes. I'm sure the guy who wrote it is awesome, it's just that whoever translated it didn't have english as a first language.

The two books recommended to me by my Judo and wrestling coach:
Mechanics of Judo by Robert G. Blanchard, Charles E. Tuttle Company, 1961 Analytical studies of 15 selected standing techniques.

Textbook of Judo Nagayasu Ogasawara-Kokushi Dojo Inc., 1988
An hardcover book withphotos and descriptions of all the basic techniques plus combinations, counters and multiple variations.

Humbly,
Devin Willis

I have an old edition of "Kano Jujitsu" by a chap whose name I forget. It's pretty interesting from a historical point of view, particularly where it talks about reviving people who've been killed in judo!
