Well, theres much debate over the subject. Most notably amoungst some british philosophers. One group is certain that the meaning of life is hats, while a rivel thinker beleives that it is 42.

I had a thought about this the other day...maybe the secret/meaning of life is to experience pain, suffering, sadness, loss and death so that when we come to a place in which we have none of those, we can truely appriciate it.

Not trying to be morbid or anything, but have you considered that life is really a death sentence with no specific termination date?

Some would say the termination date is already fixed on the day / hour / minute / second you were born; just that you were not aware or told of it.
Just for general information, the Chinese considers a new born baby to be age one; they consider the time in the womb as the first year and when death comes, they add three years. I am not sure about the reasoning for the latter; perhaps, like everybody else, dying young was culturally abhorrent?

It's not a secret if you figure it out, now is it? But it is a secret before you figure it out. Once you figure it out, it just is. Right? PS-What I posted at the beginning, Live Laugh Love and Learn, I guess would be more of my guidelines to life. Is there a difference?

the secret of life... prepare for it to end and die properly? Life, death... only words for a milestones on the path. you come in this world to help others, others come to this world to help you, all people come to this world to die, and everybody will realize that "there is no spoon", it just needs time. what is time? you are everything and nothing, you are the same as you were when you first come to the world, and will stay true to your ultimate form until you die and after that. if there nothing is changing, including the fact that everything changes, where is the time? no time at all... (I just put here some crazyness, my brain is already sleeping, it is 2AM here now )

awwww...I sawwee.
I just thought of another angle to attack this...with linguistics! "The secret of life is..."
secret: means 'Dependably discreet'.
in other words, you need 2 minds in order to even HAVE a secret. Therefore, there can be no 'secret'. there literally is no spoon.
There can be a mystery of life...or a wonder of life...but no secret. HA! {immitates Ace Ventura: 'How doya... like... that...., huh?'}

Ed 11/18: "A singleminded man, unchallenged in all his ways." (FWIW) Here's a great irony: 'Gospel of James' - Scholars have established that, based on the style of the language and the theological concerns, and the fact that the author is apparently not aware of contemporary Jewish customs, the work is pseudonymous. Source lol...tell me about "double mind" again, 'James'

some quoted from Tao te Ching: Quote:
Who accepts nature's flow becomes all-cherishing; Being all-cherishing he becomes impartial; Being impartial he becomes magnanimous; Being magnanimous he becomes natural; Being natural he becomes one with the Way; Being one with the Way he becomes immortal: Though his body will decay, the Way will not.
Quote:
Some are filled with life; Some are empty with death; Some hold fast to life, and thereby perish, For life is an abstraction.
Those who are filled with life Need not fear tigers and rhinos in the wilds, Nor wear armour and shields in battle; The rhinoceros finds no place in them for its horn, The tiger no place for its claw, The soldier no place for a weapon, For death finds no place in them.
Quote:
Endurance is to keep one's place; Long life it is to die and not perish.

The Cycle Song
...The years flow by with ceaseless turn, the Ageless die, the young return. Shadows sprout and grow by day - Man falls short along the way. Poets' words on pinion'd wing outlast the ruin time can bring. The seeds are sown, they live and die forgotten as the years flow by...

Good to know. I'll make sure to remember never to tell you any.
The Mark and Ed Show... I'm in, sounds like a good way to meet chicks.
anyway, I think I've got it now, the secret of life is contained within the following quote:
Quote:
What we've come up with can be reduced to two fundamental concepts. One, people are not wearing enough hats. Two, Matter is energy. In the universe, there are many energy fields, which we cannot normally percieve. Some energies have a spiritual source, which act upon a person's soul. However, this soul does not exist automatically, as orthodox Christianity teaches, but has to be brought into existence by a process of guided self-observation. However, this is rarely achieved due to mankind's unique ability to be distracted from spiritual matters by everyday trivia.

I think this one is at least...
"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do." Eleanor Roosevelt

so...maybe the secret to life is it's meaning?...no wait, the secret to life is giving life meaning? hmmm, sounds awkward...life...secret...meaning... {Ed gets stuck in a repeating logic loop sometimes, and usually snaps out of it after being clonked in the head...luckily, he is training tonight and should be fine by morning.}

A Secret Each
Round and about, Other things exist, Inside and within, A secret sleeps; Of a life by itself, By itself, a life unique; And yet to all life, A secret each. To be held within, But never doubting, The stranger and his secret, The sea and the beaches, The baker and his bread, The graveyard and the graves. All these and more, All we hold in awe, Tells us the parts, That make the whole, But the whole itself asleep, For the parts, A secret each, Are by themselves, Unique.

No kneading (needing? ) in pie crust. You cut. It is about mixing, and cutting, ingredients at the right temperature. Then, adding water to just the right texture...it has to be felt to know. One can experiment, one can get a cookbook and try to learn on one's own...but the best way is to have a teacher who can point out the right way and feel.

Apple Pie....did someone say, Apple Pie?
I think I could live off of Applie Pie alone. Far better than most cakes, better than pumkin for sure. And in a pinch, a slice of cold apple pie with a cup of hot, black coffee is a great breakfast....
Man, I miss home made apple pie! Had to buy mine at a bakery.
Good, but just lacking that je nais se quoi.

hence the qualifier 'Gnostic gospels'. ---------------------------------------------
"The secret of life is...not losing." -Onaga, Yoshimitsu
This is similar to Funakoshi's quote: "Do not think about winning; think about not losing."

the secret of life....survival.
and understanding that "life feeds on life"...life is predatory...all life, and that is the reason for what we call "death".

Wildbill,
While that is a pragmatic explanation and true...it is still not a consideration of living life well....and being happy.
Mere survival can be equated with minimum brain function, a feeding tube, and a coma. Not necessarily the most competent platform from which to view the whole expanse of life.

In an article I had to read, the Cybernetics of Life by Holmes Rolston, for my Religion, Science & Philosophy I class, Rolston asserts that "[t]he secret of life is that it is a passion play" and that we are give "the power to suffer through to something higher."
Just a point to ponder...

Can't recall, but like most women she doesn't listen when I do... I just have to wait.

lol....believe me, pretty much every day that I survive I am happy. Even if I have little else, I have gratitude for the life I have been given.
