They spray on animal fat (usually chicken/poultry) preserved with tocopherols (vitamin E) to add flavor.

Worked for McDonalds (boiling fries in animal fat), why not dog food.

one time my dog (black lab, name: Scout) complained her water was tepid. She told me this by peeing in the dish. Labs are usually pretty smart like that.
