In my line blood chokes are the only alowable type of choke and seem very effective. I have been wondering lately about air chokes and their effectiveness in real life, and if they are when would one be best served using one instead of a blood choke? Thoughts?

Cutting off blood supply is better. It takes way to long for victim to pass out from cutting off air supply.

Air chokes will only work as well as blood chokes if you are able to collapse the wind pipe upon application. However, I would not recommend practicing this on other people, so stick to the blood chokes.

I personally feel that blood chokes are more effective because they're easier to practice and get a feel for. They WILL put a man out. There really is no reason for air chokes unless you're trying to kill someone.

Well effective in what sense...blood chokes don't take long for the unskilled...the choke (more of a crushing technique) where you crush the opponents wind pipe might take longer for the unskilled...but results in permanent damage to the opponent...and

Effective depends on your intend...

The ulimate aim of any choke is to stop the opponents brain from receiving oxygen even if it means cutting of the oxygenated blood supply or crushing their wind pipe...

Don't practise air's not a practisable technique...

Blood choke can be "safely" used to render unconscious or if held for a bit longer-kill.

Air choke is riskier-easier to injure opponent-whether that is your intent or not.It also takes 10 times longer to render unconscious or kill opponent.

Why would anyone use it? It is risky to practice, take ways to long.

The typical rear strangle cuts off air and blood supply, but I would assume that the opponent becomes unconcious as a result of the blood being cut off first. If you continued the hold after knocking him out, then I suppose the air part would kick in, and you could easily kill him, not that you'd want to [IMG][/IMG]!

Cutting off blood to brain causes it to die.Causing the brain to die kills you(unless you are brain dead to begin with).

I cut off airway-you still have a "reserve" of oxyngenated blood flowing-supplying cells with O2 and removing cellular waste.Even after O2 runs out, blood still removing cellular waste-till it becomes saturated. At this point cells begin to die.

I cut off blood flow-no O2,no removal of cellular waste-cells die.

Not sure how you were taught rear naked choke, but the way I was taught does not restrict airway.

Blood chokes only cut the supply of blood off for the duration of the choke that is being applied. Immediately afterward, the supply is renewed. It's done all the time with no long term effects.

Cutting off the airway on the oth3er hand can cause death rather quickly, especially of the airway collapses. Air chokes are much more dangerous.

#20220 - 01/18/04 02:52 PM Re: Air chokes or blood chokes?

Actualy, blood choke is more effective, making it potentialy more dangerous. If held for around 40 secs. causes death or brain damage. Also certain segments of the population have lost elasticity in wall of blood vessels due to pathology, age, etc.-once blood vessel is closed,it does not naturaly reopen.
But in general you are correct Jkogas.

Airway chokes are dangerous because of high potential for damage to trachea.Applying pressure to trachea can irritate it,causing it to swell shut. Can cause rips or tear, causing blood flow into lungs-filling lungs with fluid.
