A person by the name of "Chief" Roman teaches some sort of native american martial art. I'm not sure how legit it is as I was in an email debate about 5 years ago because he gives black belts out after 12 months in Ed Parker's Kenpo.

Here's a link:

"1st degree certification is available in this program now for $995. Program includes videos tapes, manuals, black belt and certification."

That is for his NA art. I remember when this guy first appeared. It was about the same time that some guy was claiming to have knowledge of ancient African martial arts.

As far as I know, NA didn't have any formalized martial arts beyond some basic wrestling. Can't tell you where I know that from, I don't recall the source.

I agree with Kenposan. I am not familiar with any codified NA or strictly African martial arts, although both cultures have some pretty serious coming-of-age tests for their males (rock throwing fights and "sundancing" in NA, hunting elephants with small weapons in Africa, etc).

Tough stuff, but not exactly "martial arts".

well in africa its more about the weapons with most tribes isn't it? like the ones that use short spears and large sheilds, and a small bow is popular with quite a lot of tribes.

i don't really know much about the native americans but don't they use bows, bone-handled knifes and tomahalks? wouldn't there be training in these? especially with a tomahalk but i get the impression its more a tool than a weapon due to its size.

Wrestling is big in some African societies. Inuit also did it. maybe NA also have some.

i think every fighting culture has some sort of wrestling in it, as its just something that happens when someone grabs you instead of hitting you.

also the idea of inuits fighting amuses me. in my head i can see two inuits rolling in the snow in full furs then one just gets up and says 'ah sod it its to cold, want some whale blubber?'
oh god i'm rambling again.

Sorry to deviate from America, but as we'd touched on Africa anyway... I think you may find certain tribes include martial technique in the initiation ceremonies of young men (and maybe women) but these may be secret to the uninitiated.

I once saw a great documentary about the Zulu wars where they said the Zulus had special crack regiments of shock-troops. These guys took a special drug to make them more aggressive. They demonstrated it by getting two equally matched Judoka to spar before and after one of them was given the drug. pretty impressive.
