wing chun blocks or any kung fu block come up as a reflex cuz training with them repetitively u get that so my question is could i use them if i was point fighting in a karate tournament?? or is that illegal?

As a wing chun block is no different from a karate block, you should have no problem.

What?? I m pretty sure that was a joke.

The answer is read the rules and ask the organiser. It depends how the event is organised. If they say that you can use trappings and takedowns and stuff then great but if they say, strictly karate, then if you do a bong sau then you will get disqualified.

Why?

A standard Bong Sau is similar to karate's sukui-Uke. There'd be no reson for disqualifying him.

The Wing Chun guys I've trained with have come to the comclusion that there really isn't that many differences in technique between Karate and Wing Chun. More a difference in emphasis.

I search the internet to find a picture of the block you are talking about, and I m sorry but it looks nothing like the bong sau. The bong sau doesnt lift the punch or even deflect it, it absorbs it, and is used solely for the purpose to gain contact with the guys hands (build a bridge) and then trap his hands or go for the kill.

It doesn't look like it but I use it in the same way you describe. In fact I use any number of my "Karate" blocks using this methodology.

I enjoy trapping another guys hands in competition.

So go ahead, use the "Wing Chun" techniques in competition. You'll soon find out what works and what doesn't.

On a differnt note, how would the referee decide what is karate and what is wing chun if presumably you are only allowed to use karate moves in comps.
Unless the only thing that makes it a karate comp is the fact that you are not allowed take downs and ground works?

A punch is a punch, a block is a block etc.

The only difference is that if he goes in for a "Karate" tournament, chances are his techniques may not look "full" enough and therefore the referee may not score him as often as the karate guys. Hey, he's the one that wants to go on to their mat!

In the karate comps I deal with, sweeps and throws are allowed.

Generally in karate comps gound work is not allowed, so don't do it. I'll confess that once having thrown my opponent to the floor I pulled him into an arm bar. I told the ref that it was the best method I knew of preventing my opponent from hitting me.

So what makes a karate competition, a karate competition, and not a freestyle competition?
