Its been many months since I raised this issue. This particular chaallenge has not gone away and it is insanely ~vexing~ to say the least! Given it is a "new year" and there are many new members, I thought I would raise it again, see if there might be new thoughts, views on the original thread-header above...

Hummmmngh. Ok, lets try this another way....

If you have a pain/s deep in the leg and want to figure out which muscle, or "part" is causing the problem...

The leg moving away from the body is painful in a specific spot. Deep on the outer (external) side of the femur. The spot being from the bottom (literally) where something attached/rubs against the ball and socket where it presumedly attaches, or merely very high up on the femur bone in that area. Deep, firey and painful if leg abduction occurs

For extra points adduction is painful in the same leg, but on the inner side, dead center of the leg at the knee very near the knee joint, slightly below the surface...

But equally sharp when the whatever it is is utilized.... suspictous of a ligament... doing this one.

Same with leg flexion identical location, identical sharp pain x10.

How do you figure out the part, or parts which are being major challenges in spote of being ridicilously cautious... (ie simple range of motion movements whether abduction, adduction, flexion... are lessor versions of the very unpleasant sensations with any weight...)

Thoughts how (in my place) you'd explore (carefully) which part/s are making trouble????

Overall, I would have to agree with Joel. The odds of a layperson being able to self-diagnose difficult bio-mechanical questions are fairly low.

Remember also that most people's bodies, while mysteriously wonderful in what they can do, are not monuments of symmetry or other geometrical perfections. Muscles and tendons may attach at different points on opposite sides of the body, leading to slight imbalances. They may be longer or shorter on one side due to nature or nurture. Etc.

I wish I had a better answer for you, but I don't recommend that people learn martial arts on their own, either.

Sigh... I wish you did too. I have a decent amount of bodywork training (& experince) but pathology/injury was not the focus... until far later in the programs. After 500 hours I was done for a long, long time. But, going through the books has been a good refresher... and given me a few thoughts what's been going on.

A genuine pity more practitioners do not get even more seriously into anatomy, physiology so forth... its an incredible and amazing study.

No problem, Jeff. I've used Gray's a few times to try and self-diagnose what certain parts I've had injured. Was never able to do anything about my pains except wait for them to heal over, which they have done fairly well.
