I give everyone in the Zen/Med room permission to do nothing for 15 minutes today at a time of your choosing.

How does one DO no-thing? Perhaps the master (of nothing?) could give a lesson?

'master of nothing' ...I wish. I'm more of a non-master.

The non-point of the non-exercise is un-practicing anti-activity. when you can't do this, you are a non-master.

unclear so far?

I was going to not respond in a show of (non) unity, but I thought that would not be appropriate.

While I do not practice non-activity (except when I'm sleeping), I do try to take a few minutes each day to clear the mind, as it were. That may mean playing drums, hitting the bag or simply sitting there.

Doing nothing sometimes requires actually doing something to acheive the sense of ..... doing nothing.

But is actively seeking to do nothing, actually doing something? I'm serious. I don't see how it possible to really do nothing. Seeking relaxation is a endeavour unto itself, yes?

All this talk of nothing is starting to stress me out!

Matt,

You are right! Before I read your post, I was going to write a rebuttal to Kin asking how one practices to not practice? But therein lies the difficulty and the difference of appreciation when one takes time to gain perspective of one's situation...to relax...which is an endeavor. Or when one actively knows something should be and could be done, but decides not to do it.

The consequence of the former is an understanding that to perform one's best, at times, requires a departure from the activities at hand. Just like resting a day after heavy lifting, or taking a breather during a good hike. Even taking a moment out of reading a good book to blink the eyes, stretch the back, and breathe deeply before plunging back in. No moral hinderence to the decision.

The latter always leaves a burden of conscientiousness that has that nagging, harping voice whispering in the back of your mind..."You should be doing what your not doing...."

Practice at relaxing recovery...not the same as laziness. Though I excel at one and not the other...I should be washing the car.

-B

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! You can't talk about chores in a thread about doing nothing!

TAKE IT BACK! TAKE IT BACK! NOT LISTENING! NOT LISTENING!

I was able to do nothing for about 10 seconds this morning... during this time, I got nothing done for 15 minutes.
Sitting in the living room with my first cup of coffee, I'm just looking at the reflections on the tv tube (which is off)...I noticed I could clearly see the space behind me and made a mental note to remember that so I can catch the two 4-ft ninjas living in the house (my sons) sneeking up on me in the future. the thought drifted and I blanked out for (what felt like) 10 seconds. couldn't recall what I was thinking for that short time. either I dozed off with my eyes open or I managed to do nothing for a moment. either way, it was relaxing.

butterfly- I want to think that doing nothing means doing something and letting nothing happen on its own when it needs to.

Non-thoughts, anyone? Anti-thoughts?

I think when an anti-thought smashes into a positive thought....the universe may implode.

Better to keep thinking one way and not the other. If I actually thought it would be work to non-think, I would wouldn't do it, nor would I ever go on vacation. Laziness can be a virtue...if you rationalize hard enough!

If you all think you are doing anything, think again.

"We" are all the 'dream-thoughts' of Brahma.

When He wakes up, "we" will all disappear; and that includes all the Mods

lay off the pipe, dude.
{inhale...}
{hold it, hold it...}
next, someone will point out that our whole Universe could be just one cell in the fingernail of a oooggle-astronomical sized giant.
{exhale...}

I haven't done nothing since the blank tv incident. I don't plan em, but I like it when they happen. I'm pretty sure it's different from spacing out, because when I zone, I'm usually thinking about something either very slowly or mentally repeating like a record that skips.

Has playing the drums affected MA?... or vise versa?
Are there any other musicians on the boards?
Do you have any recordings of your playing?
I have some on the net at:

Doing nothing is logically impossible, hence the word "doing". when you do nothing you are doing something, which is nothing.

I don't think I've ever done nothing, but I remember this:
Lying on my front lawn in the sun with a friend I've known all my life, drinking lemonade. This was the day before he moved to China to teach English again. This felt like nothing, and it felt good.
