no.

Like with all MA training it is best to learn from a good instructor.

You'll progress faster and learn correct technique. Plus with your instructors eyes watching you, he/she will be able to sort out mistakes before they become bad habits.

And should you ever get your hands on a real sword, you won't cut various limbs off of yourself or others...

If you were learning from a proper instructor you shouldn't have to "see what you are aiming for".

Part of good instruction is to show what the end result should be.

So again, please seek out a qualified instructor before you hurt yourself or someone else. I'm glad its a bokken you are playing with and not with a shinken.

everyone above is correct, you should get proper instruction if you want to use a bokken correctly. try and find an Iaido dojo near you where you can study. i'm sorry i don't know any sites.

Iaido is the japanese art of 'drawing the sword' which is about drawing your sword faster than you opponent disabling or killing them faster - bit like a gun-draw thing in the wild west. it has been used in its present form for about 400 years now making it one of the oldest martial arts still practised. it is similar, if not, what the samurai used as they're style in sword-fighting.

i will warn you that Iaido takes years to perfect and is no something that can be rushed. there is usually no sparring and the lessons are mostly doing katas/ forms. and you should never use or really even touch are proper shinken (a katana with fully sharpened blade) until sensei tells you unless you don't mind losing your fingers lol!!

i hope this helps. i'm also going to guess that you learn kobudo as part of your karate training by the list of weapons you have given.

thank you for that!! but no...my sensia does not like to teach weapons in full classes!! i have never brought a weapon... all my weapons are from over instructures and friends!! i have learnt the nunchuku and sai by taking them to my instructure privatley!! as for the tonfa i learnt that of my own back!!!

i have tooken my boken to my instructure.....but i would just like some videos on the boken!! as karate is a "empty hand sport" my sensai does not belive in teaching weapons!!

i think the only weapon that you can learn by your self is the nunchakus coz if you do smthn worng it will bounce back at ya, hitting your head or body.Thats when you know you did smthn worng and try agin antel it doesnt hit you... but sure its nice to be some exceprt to look at what you have from time to time

Webby...

Round 1: You asked a very common question that was answered by people of experience
Result: You ignored the advice (they really weren't blowing you off)

Round 2: You let it be known that your karate Sensei (correct spelling) has a different opinion than you.
Result: You disregard his advice w/ the belief that a website or video will transform you into a sword master.

Round 3: You ask the forum members again.
Result: You don't learn because you're arrogant, immature & naive ("I'm good @ small weapons", "I taught myself tonfa").

Round 4: I'm telling you in a firm but supportive way that if you really want to progress in the MA & become proficient (as opposed to just being a pretend samurai/Jedi knight), train hard w/ a good instructor taking in everything you can. Only after YEARS (maybe 10), you'll understand what we're telling you. So put your pride aside & be humble but keep that fire going (the excitement of wanting more from MA). Everything will come together in it's own time - no need to rush.
Result: ???? (it's your move)

it just what i thinks maybe its worng, maybe its true. Ideas are the beginning of everything.. you think of something ''idea came to ur mind'' then you do what you have thought in your mind..

hedkikr has made some excellent points about your training path, I suggest you read them carefully and take our advice to find an instructor to train in weapons with.

In a few years you'll see things in a different light and I'm sure you will be making some valuable and insightful posts here because of it.

If you've been around this forum for any amount of time, this kind of question often pops up & the same answer goes out to the noob from more seasoned members. Some take it seriously & accept the answer while others get the feeling that there is a conspiracy to keep "secrets" from them.

For you & the countless others who ask (& will ask) the question & are given this answer "Seek out a competent instructor.", know that it is meant in the most sincere & helpful way. You've been fed too much MA-related garbage through the media, buddies & phony masters you'll hopefully learn that many of this forum's members are legit.

Now go seek a competent instructor.

If sword work is not part of his karate curriculum, then perhaps the more pertinent question his sensei should be asking him is WHY does he want to learn the bokken?

Weapons work should reinforce te-waza. It is not a separate thing unto itself. What you do with a weapon is the same as what you do empty handed.

Have you (webby) at least read Dave Lowry's book on the subject?

In any case, you should be talking this over with your "instructure" as it were....

Also, please note the 2nd sticky on this forum....

I can't speak for the others but I am an instructor hence why I know how hard it is for students to understand the lesson even when you are there with them and guiding them through every step and movement.

I'm an instructor who (coincidentally) is working with some other senior instructors on starting up a "kubudo club" within our dojo. and just so no one has an itch to say it, yes, we've sought out competent weapons instructors!
