I would like to find a WTF school that incorporated the 5 elements that I've mentioned before but unfortunately those are few and far between. I've researched many TKD schools, most happened to be WTF, almost all of those happened to focus their training in kicking and sparring. The others incorporated some self defense and punching techniques but not on a regular basis. Like it or not, it's a characteristic of many WTF schools to mainly focus on those 2 elements. They emphasize kicking and sparring while forms, punching, and self defense aren't given that much importance or attention. That you attend a WTF school which incorporates all the key elements of a well rounded martial art unfortunately happens to be the exception, not the rule.

And I completely agree with you. I can't argue that fact because I'd be wrong. The majority of WTF schools focus solely on Olympic sport, which is rather sad, because that takes away from Tae Kwon Do as a martial art and gives it the bad reputation that it has.
If there are no schools around there in Tae Kwon Do that have what you want then switch to another style that does. No point staying at a school you aren't happy training at.

Yes, it is definitely unfortunate because all it does is help tarnish the rep of an otherwise good style (if taught correctly and in the traditional manner). But anyway, it is what it is...

If I were you, I would try to find a different TKD school to attend. Some schools are like that, they just focus on a couple of things and that is it. Very unfortunate. I think that if you found a TKD school that did incorparate the things you want, you would be very pleased. It's not the TKD that you have a problem with, it is the same old grind that needs attention.

Well, I've gone through the same thing. When people ask me what style I train in, and I tell them WTF TKD they basically go on and on about TKD not being a real martial art but a martial sport and so on and so fourth. Although in my particular case, it's true. But it's a general misconception that a lot of martial artists have of TKD as a whole. I guess it's just something that Tae Kwon Do practitioners have to deal with.

Whitetiger, trust me I've looked all over. I just haven't had any luck. In my general area most TKD schools happen to be your typical McDojang. I guess that's why I've become a bit discouraged. I know there are plenty of really good TKD schools. However, they're either not in my area, or outta my budget. One really good traditional TKD school that I was interested in charged $800 per six months for just for 2 classes a week  A bit too steep for a college kid with student loans to worry about.

Where in NYC are you located ? I know of a gentleman who trains in the Bronx at an ITF school. Sometimes going thru the yellow pages won't get you what you are looking for. I am certain I can put you in touch with several people that can help you find what you are looking for within TKD. I am not trying to change your mind about staying in TKD or not, it just seems that you are more frustrated that you can't find a TKD school that offers a well rounded curriculum. Are you opposed to traveling over to Jersey to train ? I know of a school over there that is ITF and is EXACTLY what you are looking for, both instructors are 5th dans, very well rounded in SD, one is even a police officer, so you know control tactics will be included as well. If you like e-mail me privately and I will forward you all the info I can to help you out.

i would definitly leave if i was u in my tkd club we do relistic fights and hav spars but we learn things we could put into practice in t e real world . i believe tkd has benifited me alot i would now use my legs in a a street fight were as most people wouldnt . also sparring does help u because your body gets used to bloking and attakin g .
