i trained like let me see minimum 3 to 6 hours a week (at dojo) it is crazyyyyyyyyyy. but to be honest you have to consider what is important first. martial arts is fun but u cant' just ignore everything else.

I agree, Sanchin you are an inspiration to us all. Personally I believe that trainign should all depepnd on you. You need 1 free day to do your things in be it housework or leisure time. The rest is really up to you. Many train 7 days a week. Many train 1. it's your personal decision as no amount is right or wrong it's just right or wrong for you. I'm not qualified in karate as i partake in judo not Karate but I couldn't help noticing your topic and this is my opinion.

I just wanted to comment on using family as targets. When I was younger and heavily into training, I used to whip up side kicks and see how close i could get to the person. WELL, my brothers girlfriend was the victim and while I was throwing a flutter of kicks, she leaned forward. Knocked the heck outta her, but she was fine. Luckily, I noticed her getting close, and pulled a little bit..:) Has anyone use light switches are targets? God, I remember always trying to turn light on and off with Mae Geri.

Just wanted to share..

And I train about 3x a week for an hour at formal class. On the off days i trying to traing on my own, but it gets hard with the fanmily. Luckily, all 4 of my kids are training too.

'Balance and training.'

I am on the light side, but my efforts on 'balance' focus on integration. Either it is integrated as a healthy 'way of life'...or it is an obsession.

'Training' for me does not focus solely on the physical. Training encompasses mind, body and spirit and it is a constant. When not physically engaged, then it is working on the other two. For me, whether it is working, making dinner, washing dishes, or dealing with crisis ...the effort is feeding back into my training.

some examples of good karate -

physical,

dojo training (to learn), conditioning, good diet, good sleep paterns, good presentation and clenleness

mental

meditation (for mushin), research/history, keeping level headed during training re kumite/partner work, gradings

spiritual

keeping in good spirit, keeping right sized, paying respects to students, instructors and the dojo/art


Its all karate and as always a balance of these things is good for long term development/improvement and to be able to sustain a healthy interest.
