I'm not talking about a specific form really, just general drills to help imrove my fighting and execution of kung fu. I know leg strength is VERY important and I've been practicing horse stance every day.

Was wondering about some good 2 person drills, using 'partial' contact (definitely not full, I'm not that good yet), please go into detail and thanks!

there are thousands!!
What kung fu style do you do?
What techniques are you practicing curently?
Whats is your footwork like?

Answer those questions and we may be able to do some iprovisations for you.
Also, the thing with partner drill is that they all have the same principle. One attacks and one defends, and you repeat the sequence over and over until you get it perfect.
Tere are drills to improve distance judgment, footwork, defence, attack, defence against boxers/idiots/jiujitsu dudes etc.
You have to be more specific I m afraid.

But I like the topic!!

Also keep in mind that there are not and should be no set drills, once you become familiar with their purpose and you may already be, you can start making your own drills. Of course there are set ones, but they are not exhaustible.

its hard to say do xyz since I don't know what style you study.

here are some examples of what I do:
1. Circle drills
any amount of people (normally max 6)
each person does a set group of attacks. Or to start with everyone does the same attack. The person in the center must defend against each person. turning after each attack. Its best to attack as soon as the person turns to really work the reflexes.
Here is a clip of a friend in the circle
http://wingchunkungfu.cn/Mastermpg/112699h.mpg

its a old clip!

2. controlled sparring
a “attacker” does a set group of attacks, while the other defends with anything they want. Normally is best to mix speed, timing and patterns. Don't think that you will be fighting people of your style! So throw attacks similar to boxers or street fighters.

Another clip of Gorden and tyler doing this type of sparring
http://wingchunkungfu.cn/Mastermpg/121499w.mpg

(old!!)

good example (recent)
http://www.vbwingchun.com/sparring.wmv
notice how the attacker is trying to get the WC defender to use many different attacks, and not really going fast (normally gorden goes faster)

3. set drills
find a technique you want to practice

create a limited drill based on just that technique. Nothing fancy, just make sure its improving muscle memory and you are doing good technique.

(old!!)

The vids are old, and I don't rep. any of the people, they are just for example only.

Thanks for the tips. The style I'm studying (reading about, I have no teacher) is Shaolin Long Fist Kung Fu. It kind of covers a little bit of everything, it shows all the hand forms and a bunch of attack and defense forms. I basically don't even know what I'm doing, so help with the footwork would be nice, since kungfu seems to be about channeling leg power and protecting all the vital body parts: knees, groin, armpit, etc.

When I studied Jow Ga (a hybrid style of Northern, Hung Gar, Choy ga) I found this site interesting.

Make sure you point your knee in the correct direction. Its very hard to learn anything without a teacher.

Mate, I m sorry but you cannot learn from book or video. If you think you can then you are wrong. Books can only supplement live teaching with theory. There is absolutely no way on this planet you will ever be able to use what you think you ve learnt or be able to apply it correctly in a simulated or real situation. There is no point in doing drills because you will have no idea what you are doing. Sorry to burst any bubbles you may have but its the truth. Find a teacher and learn it properly, it will be 1000 times more rewarding. Dont have money find a job, not old enough to get a job ask your parents, parents wont give you then offer to do chores for neighbours for money.

The problem MAGr is not any of that, it's that I live in a small town with a few crappy dojos, none of which even remotly deal with chinese arts. There's a kickboxing place and a grappling place and a few family places, and that's all.

Sorry I came out hard.
Its just that people get dupped into those instructional 'become the best in two minutes' dvds and videos.
Ok lets work the problem. There are karate styles such as goju ryu which are very similar and are infact descended from kung fu.
Those family places that you say, have you looked into them? Are they genuine? what do they teach? From my experience its the backstreet dudes that operate in basements that offer the best teaching.
Obviously dont join the All American Dream Team Family with matching head bands!

Appart from that, I have to say that although reading from a book and looking at some dvds can supplement your training, it cannot be learn from that. You have to have a teacher describe the feeling, the teacher needs to look and correct your mistakes. If you make mistakes later on it will be like building a house on faulty foundations. When you need it the most it will collapse in a heap.

I can suggest some books that talk about the theory behind kung fu and some philosophy and some tactics etc. But you will not learn how to fight unfortunately.
In my opinion, you should join a school even if its not the dream that you wanted, it is better than learning things wrong.

Also, (and believe on this), EVERY art has something to offer, you can find what you want in EVERY art. That is why its called an art form, because after you learn the basics you can mould it to suit your character and temperament. Its like learning an instrument, the best guitarists in the world know how to play at least one other instrument really well. If you start a MA and you start becoming good at it, you will love it and you will get into it, no matter what it is. The type of school is more important than the style.

Everyone on this forum will say that its not the art its the artist. Trust that saying, and your efforts will be rewarded.

Keep us updated and let us know what schools you find.

Be well.
