I've never heard of a legitimate MA school requiring a tattoo of any kind. If you were told to do this, the school & it's instructor are highly suspect...maybe even a cult. Find another place to learn.

If on the other hand you want a tattoo (providing you're of legal age), think it over & don't commit to one on impulse because what you think it's cool today may be stupid next year. Ink lasts forever (laser removal costs more, hurts more) & your skin is never exactly as it was before.

Also, careful of where it's done. A friend got a rose on her ankle & hepatitis too.

BTW...contrary to what you might be thinking, I have a tat - too.

Hanzi Smatter - White People with Bad Chinese Tattoos.

Check out this site. Dedicated to mistranslation of Kanji and Chinese. Misspelling Chinatown is a good one. Breaking Extreme Wind and My Husband Pimps Me Out are classics as well.

If you get hold of some Kanji make sure the stencil is reversed. Had a San Dan get a tattoo of the school's name. All of the kanji was reversed. We proudly showed it to our Grandmaster during one of his visits. The wearer was not so proud. good times

Zombie, I'm sorry, I have to take his side, as I just got "amerika no heishi" (American Soldier) on my left forearm. It doesn't matter what language it's in, only that the meaning is personal.

Fortunately, I have the resources available to me to make sure I get what I want tattooed on my body, as in a few years of japanese studies in college and a kanji/kana book.

Could be fun to look for the most original combos!

Let me see…

I’m French . I currently live in China . My primary art was Brazilian (capoeira), taught by a Japanese instructor. I then moved to a Japanese art (jujutsu) which I learnt in the UK at the hand of an English instructor. My latest master is Vietnamese .

Mmmh…

For my tattoo, how about “Egyptian taekwondo rules!”, written in Welsh ?
