As a purely intellectual matter there is no "need" to suffer -it the natural state of the human condition. To understand that it is "something" is a bit off the mark. We all "suffer" to one degree or another on a daily basis - a bad boss, a difficult realtionship, guilt, indecision and so on. Even love and happiness is a form of suffering although we typically do not associate 'good' feelings with a level of suffering. However it is the very essense of duality, of yin and yang. These situations are unavoidable in our daily lives. It's not what happens to you that matters is what you do about it. The question I constantly ask myself is not "what" I see but why I see it that way. In the western sense of it, to be "dispassionate" is to be cool or unbiased. That is not necessarily a proper understanding but it is a step toward an 'unfettered mind'.
These are only words and I think I've already said too much. In the end, they may either contribute to ones undertanding or add to our confusion. I wish I understood it all better myself and could put this in clearer terms.

Passion as suffering? I never knew that.
It makes perfect sense, though. To have a passion for something is to suffer the trials related to the experience, and also the time away from it.

Perhaps only when we have passion can we suffer. Actually, that would help explain the "withdrawal" response to trauma that some people experience.

There is also the possibility that having passion shows a desire to be at one with something and never achieving it... therefore the pain connected to this not-at-oneness.
