On the path of becoming, on entering any 'way', what is the role of passion?

Most folks think of passion as synonomous with excitement or lust. The latin root for the word passion means to "suffer'. "Compassion" means to Suffer with. "On the path of becoming, on entering any 'way', what is the role of passion?" I think it is a recognition and acceptance that we will suffer.

Can I take it to a more masochistic state, and say that rather acceptance, its the need to suffer in order for something to be a passion?

(To MAGr) Is swimming a passion? Do you swim through your pain?
Is pain/suffering because a passion is attached to an object...say ego?

Maybe to do something with devotion and care. To live for it, then that would mean to find your purpouse.
Why would it be attached by something

Some folks think of 'a passion for...(fill in the blank)'. Often confused for ambition or desire, they get passionate about someTHING. One can experience passion in life, say, while learning a martial art. You sweat, work at something, hit personal walls...suffer. But at a certain point, there is a 'letting go'...a 'relaxing'...and the object that one strives for dissappears. Quote:

I don`t think of passion as something that you can let go or connect it with pain.Letting go after a while for me would mean - a one time interest. Pain can come for many reasons, noone connects love... I just remembered that love is coonected with pain but why then call passion pain or suffering. More things could be called that way .

I think I like the idea of passion having similar meaning to suffering. To have passion for something we truly enjoy, we do have to suffer sometimes for it. If there is something we truly want, we will suffer much to atttain it.
