Hi Guys, Id like to hear a few ideas about the application of the above technique, i was origionally taught that it was a block/counter to the twin upset punch or a block to a twin reverse elbow strike or even a leg scoop!!! Been doing this years and I think that there is a deeper application than this, please help! Respect

Do you mean Choong Moo, as in the ITA Red Belt form? Because I was wondering the same thing.

Hmm the only thing I've ever heared of this is as a block for a side kick but then I wouldn't like to try that against a side kick :P

Well as it happens, ive contacted my head instructor over the weekend and found a realistic application. The x knifehand block stops and traps a hand technique with attacking hand grasped from the block you step forward twisting the attackers arm as you move then as the 'twin palms' are twisted and brought forward in a snapping motion which straightens the attackers elbows and works against the joint it gives a direct pressure to the shoulders forcing the attacker backwards. It works try it. My chief instructor had this explanation from a korean hapkido grandmaster who was also a master of itf taekwondo! He showed me on saturday morning and it hurts! He also said that many of the origional applications had been lost, due to the focus on mainly stiking techniques, but ther are many joint manipulation, grappling and even throwing techniques in the patterns. They just have to be worked out and practiced. Hope this has helped.

If that's the case, why have you never seen it used like that when there's sparring going on?
To tie up 2 hands blocking one hand of your opponent is inviting trouble.
1. If you tie up both hands blocking one of your opponents, you're going to get lumped with his other hand.
2. If I throw a punch at you at high speed, I defy you to "catch" it.
Personally I like to use this "block" as a strangle followed by pulling the strangled opponent down into a better control range.
Always question what you're told by anyone. I don't care if it's the grandmasters grandmaster.

I said 'Hand Technique' not punch, and im not doubting your application either but believe me this worked! The movment is very quick and fluid. As I said when i started the thread i have been given answers in the past which i have questioned, this is just one other application of the movment which is not set in stone so please do not misunderstand the nature of the thread because all i am looking for is answers and not the answer! there is more than one. Dont discredit somthing unless you have been shown or applied it yourself! because i dont. I have used the knifehand 'x-block' on other occasions including neck attacks etc, but the block in choong moo has a slightly differing hand position, thanks for your help otherwise because ill give that a go also.
Cheers

Hang on, neither did i discount the punch, the actual technique i was shown was a wedging type motion between a 2 handed grasp toward the shoulders or head, the initial x-shape in this case may have been guard or block secondary action ie head butt etc! As i said there is no one definate answer, i wanted an effective application to the tech and was unhappy with the initial few answers thus the reason for me posting. In the meantime I was shown a particular technique which i could see would work in the given situation! Many dont ask and assume they know, i am not that way, i want to know why, how and what! anyhow thanks for your input much appreciated.
