Kakushite,

A very good gathering of kata sources.

I would like to add, however, there may still be considerable variance within the individual systems.

For example when I finally saw Shimabuku Tatsuo's Kusanku as a black belt, there are quite a few stylistic differences compared to the way my instructors taught me. Now 5% might not seem like much, but that difference can be great in execution and in application potential.

My instructors observed the founder at time teach the same kata differently. I've never tried to re-concile my kata to those movies, I just work from my instructors perspective.

But when veiwing the kata, there may be many sub variations in play within each system too.

WOW! Thanks! I found mine. I'm not much of a history person but I have to say that when I read some of the history posts and see clips like these, I get more interested.

Kusanku Version:
System: Isshinryu
Description of Kata Section: First move into kusanku stance (deep zenkutsu daichi)
Application Description: Leg sweep defense against kick or punch.
Never liked the idea that the lower, open hand was stopping a kick to the groin with a knife-hand (sprained wrist, broken fingers, anyone?). Consider that instead of stepping directly to the left (9 o'clock), you dodge that right-side kick or lunge punch by stepping forwards (11 o'clock). The upper, left-handed block becomes a grab of the upper arm from underneath OR a shuto to the armpit. The right arm catches the kick or lead leg. Here I lilke to block with the inside of the wrist, keeping my fingers as far away from danger as possible. Then perform that mawashi-uke discussed in its own recent post to dump the offender on his head.

Ironfoot,

I believe you are approaching that the lower open hand in the beginning of Kusanku Kata (Isshinryu version) is not a direct palm strike into a kick. That use is very prone to destroy your hand, instead using it as a block with the inside of the wrist (angling the fingers away from being struck) is likely the best answer for the technique as a parry.

But depending on the attack and angle of entry the total movement can be an upper parry and a strike into the abdomen or upper groin of an attacker too.

True, Victor, but after seeing several people mess up their fingers trying to block kicks, I've become partial to evading them whenever possible, or by using the block you described. It also it applicable right after the first turn in seisan, where I would NOT try to block yoko geris with shutos. Besides, with the "wrist block" you get to turn the opponent, thus sparing him from seeing the horrible things that could befall him next.

The angle of the elbow would also make this technique a good way to take the steam out of a knee strike without jamming the wrist or elbow.

George
