Members,
A friend of mine at work has a son who will be turning 13 soon.
She asked a number of men she respects to write something for him. She wanted it to be a life lesson from our expeirience. It was a neat idea. I'll share what I wrote. Feel free to add your own advice to the young folks on the site. Here goes.

Work hard. In the long run it's easier than being lazy.
Wealth. Understand how much you need and what real wealth is.
Weather the storms. They come and go.
Win. Compete. Get in the game. It is good for mind and body.
Weep. It is a path to compassion.
Wash well. Hygiene is a good thing.
Wear a seatbelt.
Wear a helmet.
Wait, till you are married. If you choose not to…
Wear a condom.
Walk away. A fight that doesn’t happen is a fight you win
Work it out. If you are wrong admit it. If you are right no one needs to know
With others, build supportive relationships.
Welcome people. (It feels good when people do it for you doesn't it.)
Water. Drink a lot.
Wine. When you are of legal age, drink some.
Watch a river. Relax, take your time.
Wed. If you find "the girl" get married. It can increase your lifespan.
Wonder. Stay curious. Keep your mind active.
Weaknesses. We all have them. Work on yours. Forgive them in others.
Worry. It is a bad habit. Take action instead.
Worship. Choose to worship truth, excellence, God, or all three…

anything but yourself.

It's your turn.

When things get tough, ask for help. You don't have to fly solo.

Excellent words oldman. I would add some, but I'm afraid words of wisdom only come from the wise.

1. never borrow or lend substantial amounts of money to/from friends

2. Be willing to trust, but prepared for betrayal.

3. Do everything in your power to travel and experience the world

4. A pretty face is nothing if masking an ugly soul

5. Set up a private pension scheme before you reach 25.

6. Learn to hold your liquor. People laugh with drunks for a short time, and behind their backs at leisure.

7. be yourself, let like minded people into your life as they appear. Quality of company is preferable to quantity.

8. Never chase buses or women, you always get left behind.

9. Never welch on a bet or promise, let your word be worth gold.

10. Never make foolish wagers

11. Live within your means, aspire but do not envy.

12. Be kind to animals

13. learn to forgive, or at least not to hate

14. Listen to your parents- they are invariably right

15. Accept that you will make mistakes, but only make each mistake once.

Thats about it.

heh - here goes from ye "good" old 16 yr old -

never never never ever take drugs - not even at parties or a try out

same with ciggies

comdoms = weapons of mass protection

advice is something someone offers u - its for u to consider and up to u to follow it

if ur chinese - then good on u - u spend much much less money on alcohol than everyone else cos u get drunk more easily

puking can be one of the most embaressing things to do at a party (ive never drank enough to puke but many of my friends have...)

SAVE UR MONEY EVEN IF U HAVE AN INCOME - my mum has put my child benifit money in my bank account ever since i was entitled to it - 16 years ago...i have something like £12,000 inside and i only found out yesturday :S

chase the bus if its a long trekk and u have money to spare - i cant remember the amount of times ive takin that leap (or sprint) and have shaved off large amounts of minutes off of my journy

seriously...rinse out the skool while u can - use there printers, computers materials EVERYTHING while u still can! remember - its taxpayers money - u might as well make use ur moneys worth!

experience is invaulable (dammit i cant even spell)

travel before u get bogged down with being an adult and a job etc and tryin out local delicatcies....and try chicken feet its nice - sounds nasty but its nice...and frogs legs...

if ur late and desperate and ur with friends in a friendly area - thumb a lift - 99% of the time it doesnt work but for the effort thats needed to carry out a thumbs up its worth the 1% of a chance to get that ride (geez did that paragraph even make sense?!)

hate can be a gd thang...its can be a fuel for boost ur performance tho dont let it consume u

BE OPEN-MINDED!!!!

...take pictures...of friends, family everyone - ive captured many moments that make me laugh, smile or reminess jus from pressing that button...

well thats my lot done - i wouldve done more but its 12:30 pm now...and im bloody knackered!!
i know a lot of u may look at my list and jus think "wat a f**ing p****!" but its what made me happy....among other things i hav forgotten about and havnt listed lol

IM GOIN TO BED GOODNIGHT!!

Sure.

1. never borrow or lend substantial amounts of money to/from friends

True friendship should be able to get over money problems.

10. Never make foolish wagers

Foolish wagers are fun. Never bet more than what you are ready to lose.

12. Be kind to animals

It might sound mean, but I honestly don't care about animals.

13. learn to forgive, or at least not to hate

A little hate is good for you. Keeps you motivated. Keep it in check though.

14. Listen to your parents- they are invariably right

That's complete horseshit. Why should they own the absolute truth simply because they're your parents? If your parents told you that you have 3 arms would they still be right?

Travel while you are young....do it alone.
Meet People every where you can....make friends with them and see thier world.
Read Lao Tzu, Jesus, Mohamed, Zen, Bagadvita...develop some sort of spiritual life, any sort you like.
Read cartoons every day...and suck up to an oldman you might learn something...lol.
Get in a ring and fight...learn to face the fear of violence head on.... do it at least once win or lose you can`t fail.
Keep your eyes and your heart WIDE open...even when it hurts like hell to look and it hurts even more to feel. Learn how lucky you are to be healthy and young.
Never forget it....stay young and healthy as long as you can.
Teach your kids to stay young and healthy as long as they can...you might need thier help when your old.
Learn to start each and every new day happy and free of expectations.
Listen to the silence, go fishing.
Go to a wild place and stay over night alone under the stars with just a blanket and a close friend, dog,or lover.

For goodness sake people. The kid is 13!

That's a bit too much information, don't you think?

How about something a little simpler?

BE all you can be.
DO all you can do.

Allow me to nitpick...

Agreed, wagers are fun. Wagering something you aren't willing to lose would be foolish.

The way we treat animals is remniscent of the way we treat people. I think you were just in a bad mood.

I disagree, but in the course of semantics. I don't think it's "hate" you're talking about, rather than a need to prove the naysayers wrong.

I agree that parents don't have a monopoly on THE TRUTH (tm). They DO, however, have your best interests at heart. Even if they may be too screwed up in the head to express their love in a wholesome way.

Ride, I respect you more than you might think simply because you aren't PC.

Hope to debate you in the future.

My turn to nitpick.
Martial arts talk has nothing to do with wagers, the way we treat animals, wearing condoms,hate,parents,etc...
Let this thread die with the all the others like it or it will soon be a flame war.

No, i'm talking about hate. As in wishing someone was dead. Hating feels good. Without hate, there wouldn't be love. Have you never felt like destroying something beautiful simply because you hated everything at this precise moment? Hate will make you feel alive. (i'm somebody who's kinda passionate... )

Balderdash ....Martial Arts has many conduits, Wisdom being one of them. How can we be so quick to throw away that which may improve ones outlook on life? As does Martial Arts?

Two words of wisdom from myself,

If at all possible, fulfill all of your dreams. Never wonder "What if", it is one of the worst feelings ever.

After a while, give up on people ...You can't help anyone, they can only help themselves.

Oh, one more, sorry ....Mind your own damn business.

Ride ...PC is "Politically Correct". You, my friend, are not PC, but I for one like that. I would be more crude myself, if the fear of people here not taking me seriously wasn't so dominant in my thoughts.

I agree on the hate thing ....I'm one for the balance. Without hate, there can not be love. Without death, there can not be life. In chess, somebody has to take the black pieces. Hate gives you passion, which is only a bad thing if taken to far.

So, another piece of advice ...Moderation is the key.

Good night.

-Ket

The treatment of animals being linked to the treatment of humans is a strongly proved fact. In the pathology of serial killing, almost all such people's first experience of killing was with household pets. Never forget that humans are animals, the fact that we have televisions does not place us above any other creature on the planet.

Hatred is not a 'good motivator'. Real hate is a detructive and distorting force. I'm not saying run around in kaftans hugging trees and singing Crosby stills and Nash numbers, (believe me, if you new me in person you would know I am far from PC), dislike what you will,be angered, feel free to offer attitude adjustment where necessary, but let things run their course. Grief fades, passion fades, laughter stops. Hate is an emotion that never loses its intensity, and will, if left to its own devices encroach on your interactions with all, and in turn, harm your life.

Your parents are the only people with greater life experience than you, that you know for sure have your best interests and happiness at heart, therefore advice from them should carry more weight than from any number of friends who make the same claims

Friendships surviving money problems. Nice in theory, I would reserve judgement till you are chasing your best buddy from school for £1500 ($3000 us) only to find he has neither the means, nor intention to make repayment.
See if he remains on your christmas card list then

I totally agree that we should keep the MA perspective in this Forum.

So here goes:-

Work hard, especially on your kata, as it the basis for all good things to come, and when it comes, you will know why kata is the way it is.

Wealth should not be a major consideration when you are minded to teach MA. How do you weight in dollars the generations after you that will benefit of what you teach today?

Weather the storms of criticism when you have another new angle to a kata application and someday your application will be the standard.

Win over your opponent in both skill and spirit in any tournament.

Weep only when you have not done the best that you could have.

Wash well your gi but not your belt because some of your past sweat and maybe blood should be carried forward to remind you of where and how you came to be.

Wear a seat belt please when driving or as passenger because destiny awaits you every time you step into a dojo and you need to arrive first.

Wear a helmet when doing serious contact sparring. It is no shame and it also certainly makes you 'braver'

Wait till you are married..... eh.......(give me sometime on this)

Wear a condom......... HELP!

Walk away only if your grappling skills are not up to scratch because 90.506% of fights end up on the ground.

Work it out if somehow your punch lacks that snap and of course find a qualified instruction near you.

By now you should get my drift, if not, go drink lots of water or wine and get married while watching the river, you'll live longer.

I am a qualified instructor near me.
