yes yes, but i like my bones just as they are (id est: in tact) and that's why i have presented my challenge, to find a realistic padded system for weapons sparring.

would any one know what sort of foams would be suitable?

We use wooden weapons as they're more realistic in weight and also gives you a better idea of the flow and motion of each weapon. When we spar, there is no contact, we just practice the movements but still make slight contact with our opponent. Although in aikido, we practice with weapons because the wrist action when striking with a weapon is similar to some of the throwing techniques we practice.

You sometimes get whacked but this only encourages you to move out the way and react better for next time!!
