Hi SOL Martial Arts

"when training your footwork should 1 train on both sides right side forward and left side forward?"

I suggest both sides forward one side backwards and one side sidewards.

"how much time should 1 spend on there footwork?"

If you want to have good footwork, lots. If you want your footwork to **** , none.

Good luck.

Rather than practicing your steps in dead repetition like "shuffle shuffle shuffle, sidestep sidestep sidestep", etc, just go out running. Shadowbox while you run. Run sideways. Run backwards. Turn around while running, both directions. Skip. jump. duck. bob and weave. move. Meanwhile, study fencers.

hey man. i just made a post on footwork in another thread. i practice mine every day. i think footwork is a crucial element which many higherlevel MAs neglect after a while. i will always start my workouts witha few rounds of basic footwork just to get a rythym.

i train muay thai. after my cardio and stretching, i do a couple rounds of footwork, walking, walk n' block, walk n' pass, walk-block-counter...of course i am doing both low and high blocks as wellas passes etc. it is essesntially a pre-shadow box warm up to start my rythym....very techique focused.
i cant speak for other MA but the best defensive position for me is an quasi-offensive stance with my weight shifting but mostly on my back foot so i can raise my front leg for blocking. i do a sort of lead foot toe tapping when en guard. its a traditional muay thai stance and probably not the best if you fighting non-muay thai fighters.

Unfortunately I don't do enough footwork trainning.Personally I feel footwork is the difference between a technique being okay or dynamite. Think about it. Your power, your range, even your speed in part, starts with proper balance. And balance is all about footwork. Even in ground fighting proper foot placement is a key. Footwork is where I usaully need to start but all to often I make that the last part of a technique I work on. Unless of course it's a kicking technique.

I used to drill footwork at every training session.

It is now so ingrained that I rarely practice it as it's become automatic.
