I personnaly have found such techniques as pac sao and lap sao effective in boxing. The hand trapping techniques that Bruce took out of the fillipino arts have worked for me rather well. Bruce has alot of hand and arm destruction techniques. When these techniques are mixed with boxing, I find it a deadly and disorienting combination. ((Mostly Boxing and a dash of hand trapping for flavor you see)) Remember hand trapping is not a block or a deflection persay. It is attacking the incomming strike. When excecuted properly they should cause alot of discomfort to your opponents arms and hands.

The theory behind such techniques. I suppose is only hit someone in the face if they're biting you. If you disable your opponents weapons, you disable the opponent

Hope that helps.

I too have often seen Pak Sao taught as a trap, however, the force that is required goes beyond the philosophy of Wing Chun. Its a sloppy dangerous move to try and trap with, and any trapping is risky, but it is a excellent slipping technique or parry.

Oh something else I also have used with success, runs along the lines of trapping (attacking the incomming strike). I'll often punch my opponents punches. Heh heh heh. It really frustrates some fighters. But its similar too the suicide Thai kick. Where you put your shin across his shin, instead of your shin on the out side of his leg. Any such techniques arn't for the weak hearted, use with discretion. You gotta take pain to give pain.

You curl your fingers so you do not lose grip. It would be tough to pin someone's arm with an open hand.
A pak sao is a specific technique.
