#133320 - 05/25/04 12:13 PM Learning Aikido on a tight budget

I live in Columbus, Georgia, and I'm on a very tight budget. Anybody have any ideas on how I can learn Aikido? I've read in a lot of forums that videos are worthless for learning an art, (and besides, videos don't come with sparring parteners) so I'd like to avoid that. If it matters, I've done a tiny bit of training, like punching a flat rock 500 times a day, and practicing a few made-up joint-locks with my brothers.

If you are a little short of cash but want to learn Aikido then why not ask around to see if there is any one in your area who does Aikido and would not mind teaching you at a reduced rate, most who do aikido have a nice nature and should not mind helping you with a few techniques. If you can't find anyone then search the net on some aikido sites, usually they have advice on technique. it is also good to get a good book on aikido or jujutsu for reference try 'the dynamic sphere' or 'total aikido' by gozo shioda, videos are good but get a base in the art first as the techniques can be complex, and you should feel the energy and intent of your uke (partner) in order to practice 'aiki'. also another major part of aikido is ukemi and learning to recieve the technique then you and your uke study and improve safely- some of the techniques can be very painfull and dangerous so it is very important to use control and sensitivity especially with arm and wrist locks.

as a tip start researching ikkyo nikyo sankyo yonkyo kote-gaeshi irimi nage and shiho nage - the base aikido techniques. i also recomend researching jujutsu techniques with atemi.

most of all aiki or harmony will help with every day life, learn the theory of that and it will help with technique also.
