As part of my responsibilities I am in charge of 2 kids classes (5-7 & 8-11). Although I am very animated and can keep their attention for most of the time I feel that I am running out of ideas. Does anyone have any fun, active drills that can keep these midget warriors occupied? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

JohnL - I know your stance of teaching children and I agree but it keeps my tuition free and the business above par.

Just taking it back to the cost of training thread though. If you teach these classes once a week each, for an hour each, that's 2 hours. Say your time is $20 an hour (yeah, that's pretty cheap I know) which makes $40 a week which is $160 bucks a month, which is $1900 bucks a year.

So much for your training being free. You're getting ripped off !!!!!

The little one can be challenging to say the least, yet one of the more rewarding endeavors we could undertake. I commend you for your efforts. That said, here are a few examples I use in my childrens classes, Crab Crawl Soccer: builds upper body strength and mobility. Inch worm relays( begin in pushup position. walk feet up to hands, then walk hands back out, continue across dojo and back. Stories, legends and tales that have a moral relating to the Dojo Kun will help to instill those principles to the young. I hope this is helpfull and that we can share more in the future. God bless

Thanks for the response. The inch worm relay sounds good I'll try that one out. As for the stories.... sounds like fun. My co-instructor and I have been doing the whole "dont talk to strangers" routine. I just tought of a couple of stories that could relate to the dojo kuns. Ahhh Mucho Gracias.

Sure Raul.

I've found when teaching young kids that the problem isn't neseccarily the drills. If you're keeping the sequences fairly simple and short, it keeps their attention. What I find is that their attention wanders between the drills and that they have problems going from a gap for instruction into a drill.

One way that worked for me;

If they're doing some line work, or work in pairs, have them in two lines. When they finish the sequence of techniques, they face their partner in a push up position, when you say go, they try and swipe the opponents hands away making them fall to the floor. (Remind them not to do a face plant before you start)

After 1 minute they stand up, rotate 1 position so they never have the same opponent and give the next sequence. The secret is to keep the technical sequences simple and leaving no time for them to ask questions or to complain about being tired. It should be go, go, go.

If you find that the sizes of partners is unequal, just go to the back of the larger kid, grab one leg of his gi, and lift it up to disturb his balance. If it's still a bit unequal, pull it around a bit. Makes the smaller kid feel great.

We use knee boxing in a similar fashion.

Go into a deep shiko dachi squat opposite your opponent then each tries to swat the others knees on the inside or outside. The blocks are often quite interesting to watch! And they move fast.... then after a minute or so change partners like normal sparring until they have done lots of rounds.

The other things we do are based on modified grappling.
