This is adressed to all those who teach female adults as well as to the ladies themselves.

I have a couple of female students who train hard for three weeks, then have a week off because they have their period and then resume as normal almost every month. Neither suffer from any gynacalogical condition.

I really don't mean to be unsympathetic, but menstruation is a normal, healthy part of being female, NOT an illness.

Sitting in a chair with a hot water bottle and complaining does not make you feel better, doing excercise does actually relieves stomach cramps as well as take your mind off them.

One of these ladies is only sixteen but the other is in her thirties and has been through CHILDBIRTH for goodness sake. Neither ar by any means beginners.

What do you think, am I a heartltess cow or are they making a fuss about nothing? Do other instructors have students like this? (obviously male instructors may be given a different reason for missed lessons but may have noticed a monthly pattern.)

It is a natural process and in pre Christian times was considered magical. Men had to make blood sacrifices to match the 'magic' that women naturally have. Some women are affected in a really profound way and the hormone balance can make them incredibly sensitive and some are barely affected at all. Knowing some of my students quite well I think there are certain times that they should stay away from the Dojo and sharp objects!

Completely agree with u Sharon, they should get on with it like we do!

Pair of sissies.

Heck I've done gradings and training camps including having a 15 stone girl kick me in the stomach 50 times whilst having a period and do u hear me moaning??

And I've had 2 kids both with *very long* & difficult labours, my last was 10lb 4oz!!

LOL @ sharp objects too!

Nothing heartless about you dearie. Tell them to get a life and do it.

Maybe it's the thought of mixing white trousers with high kicks! Especially with lots of blokes standing around gawping!

I can honestly say I have only once skipped training because I was on, and that was after one week of training! After that I thought sod it, and I just get on with it now. I get some EVIL cramps, but they tend to disappear for 2 hours when I get off my bum and do something! I do tend to turn into a bit of a clumsy dope though, and yes, that has been noticed!

Sharon, maybe they have it particularly heavy? Some women barely notice it, while others feel like it's Niagara Falls down there, and someone is sitting inside them with an electric sander! Maybe they're these regular-as-clockwork type ladies and the first day always coincides with training?

I am not sure about your specific examples. But for some women it can be very, very painful.

And there does not have to be a specific condition.

I think this kind of thing is akin to having children, some are in a painful labor for 24 hours and others, like my grate aunt, went to the loo one day and out popped a baby - she didn't even know she was pregnant.

Charlie,
I understand where you are coming from on the white gi thing and have suggested black gi pants. I teach four times a week so I can't puty it doewn to training always coinciding with theri first day.

UKFF, I know it is painful (I am not an exception) but exercise lessens the discomfort.

I could understand if they asked to be excused sit ups and other abdominal excercise or if they asked to be excused sparring because of clumsiness/hormones making them feel more agressive etc. I really can't understand missing training.

I wonder what they would do if it coincided with their grading. I took my first kyu and first dan grading at the "wrong" time of the month.

Perhaps John L is right and I am hearless...........
I will try to be more sympathetic.

Nah, you're not heartless Sharon, they are just wimps.

I get the usual cramps etc too and sometimes have to whizz off to the ladies a couple of times during training sessions if it's a heavy one. Believe me now that I am older it is usually like this most of the time these days... however I have not and will not ever miss training or grading or one of the training camps.

It seems like most of my gradings have been timed to coincide with my period...

Agree about the gi pants! Mine are blue so it's not as bad as wearing the white ones, changing to black ones is a great idea if they are allowed to.

being male i havent got a clue what it must be like....

Is it as bad as having to shave every day?

i do bring to mind a very old joke:-

Q "why do women get periods"?

A Because they deserve them.

As moderator I really must protest at the gynacological references being brought to the fore in this post.

Frankly the only claret we like to see comes out of other orifices in training

Oh dear, the menfolk are getting all flustered!

Sharon, it's very hard to believe sometimes that exercise lessens the cramps. I always used to think it was an urban myth started by the big butch lesbian PE teachers at school!

Perhaps they're just embarrassed and don't like to draw attention to it by asking to be excused certain exercises.

Mark, women may deserve the periods, but men definitely deserve the PMS! Bring on the sharp objects! Oh and, women have to shave their legs, at least we can do it without making the bathroom look like the scene of a bloody murder!

Actually, the correct answer is: because men would not be able to cope with them

Sharon,

You are absolutely, 100% correct. I always tell my husband that if it were up to men to procreate, the human race would have been extinct a long time ago.

I think Nancy got it in one!

I hate to miss a class for any reason, and I don't let "The Curse" stop me, I just pop some ibuprofen, make sure I have the needed supplies in my locker, and go for it.

Some ladies may have been taught, though, that they are "delicate" at this time, need to protect themselves and withdraw. I'd rather go full speed and burn out the aggression on a kicking bag!

sunspots,

Totally agree with you - I just feel sorry for the "kicking pad" holder :-) or the sparring partner during that week. Now, if I could only time it when a tournament is that same weekend!

Exactly! We need to figure out how to harness the aggression and use it when we need it!

(Plus when I am tired and cranky, a good workout just plain feels better than sitting on the couch...)

ditto that for giving birth and looking after the kids....

I dont know about the rest of you but I LIKE getting bruised and sore at training, makes me feel alive and that I've done something worthwhile.

IMHO Fate worse than death = sitting on couch watching TV.

Reiki,

Very well put and agree about the "feeling alive" aspect. Hopefully, I'm passing that same message on to my daughter.

Sometimes we may go to work or school or wherever with bruises, which makes us "look bad." But I don't call them bruises, I call them proof that I got off my behind and did something most women don't do. They're badges of courage and honor! Our school colors: Black and Blue! On a vaguely related note, this is a thread on another forum. It's probably too graphic for all the big hairy squeamish blokes here who are scared of the sight of blood though!

I think you're absolutely right on this one. Missing training because you're "on" is totally lame.

I'm 34, and it'll be a cold day in hell before I miss a class for anything other than a real medical emergency. I can get a bit dippy the week before I come on, though, so I have to concentrate harder, but that's it, really.

Give 'em a tampon and an aspirin and tell 'em to get on with it!

No sharon, if guys had them it'd a couple of paracetamol then off down the pub.

Seriously though my wife sometimes misses training at that time of the month. Not always but probably one month in two or thereabouts. I think it is listening to body and would never suggest she go when she feels lousy.

Some of the American Indians used to put the women that were menstuating in a tent outside the village until they were finished, some thought it was "taboo". There is an old abandoned building down the street from our village, I mean nieghborhood, I wonder if all the husbands should send thier wive there while they are having thier periods? Ken Harding,
I wouldn't want anyone to train when they really, truly aren't feeling well enough, it just bugs me when women use The Curse as an excuse!

Schanne,
Maybe the men would want to pack a few sandwiches and go there themselves!

Sharon - off topic but if you see this month's Traditional karate mag (yukky mag but i usually browse thru it in WHS ) you'll see Hironori Ohtsuka on front cover with belt all tucked in. You might want to send a copy to that chap you were talking about on t'other belt tying thread!
