#132270 - 03/31/03 09:51 AM student with cystic fibrosis

I have taught students with many different special needs including mild autism, aspergers syndrome, dyspraxia, partial sight loss and cerebal palsy with very few problems. However, I have a new student who is 9 and suffers from cystic fibrosis and I have never taught someone with this before. I am currently researcing this condition, and wondered whether any of you guys have ever taught someone who suffers from this. If so, any information or suggestions would be most welcome. Do you know anything that I should be aware of or prepared for? (for those of you who don't know what cf is, the sufferer produces huge amounts of mucus which can cause breathing problems if not treated with medication. Most sufferers are lucky to reach their early 30s).
Many Thanks
Sharon

Ive never had any personal exerience but my girlfriend did have a sufferer in her brownie group some years ago.
The parents should know more than anyone the limitations of the child and their nurse practitioner. The medication can control the symptoms very well.
I would imagine you have already spoken to the parents about this, but if your still not sure it cant hurt to ask some more. I would imagine the child was cleared for exercise before the parents brought them to the class?
On a side note, the girl who I referred to above completed the great north run last year as an adult!

Khayman, I have spoken to his parents but they were quite defensive about it. I know, from the teaching staff that he takes part in physical education classes at school, and is cleared by his doctor to do so. They also tell me that he knows his limitations and would know when to stop.
It is great to hear about the girl who is doing who is coping with her condition.
Anyone else have any experience of this?

Wadowoman,

I knew a girl who suffered from cystic fibrosis - she attended the same dance school as my sister and I. Also, there was a young man who trained at the uni who had cf, he didn't train long, but held a black belt in aikido.

Presumably if this lad has been cleared to proceed by the doctor, and the parents know what is involved and want him to attend.

At the end of the day, it is only the individual who knows their limits, and when to stop, whether we are suffering with an illness, an injury, 100% fit, or totally hungover. Provided a class is reminded periodically that you are not a psychic, and it is up to them to stop if in any doubt.

In your place I'd try not to single him out in class, but discuss in advance if he may wish to be treated differently, e.g. before a long and physically tiring grading, discuss whether he would like an alternative route - solo kata, bunkai, teach an ohyio, take a written exam, ...

Suzie,
This boy has been training for a month now. The class he attends is slower paced than my other classes as it is for white belts only and just an hours duration. He is coping well at the moment.
I was concerned that problems may arise when his training becomes more intensive, but as both you and Khayman have met people who have done vigorous excercise with this complaint, I am more optimistic.

BTW where is Khayman these days?
Sharon
