i am about to swich dojos(because i was usally there with 1 or 2 other people and my sensai felt as if he shouldnt have to teach us when not many people attend) and i was checking out this new dojo which seems pretty good, the sensai offered to train me after school for a month for no extra cost and put me in the advanced class because in his ranking system i am two belts away from black. but for this advanced class he is charging 168$ a month apposed to my other dojo which charged 75$ a month. is this a rip off or is it worth it.

p.s the classes are 3 days a week one hour each.

Why would your teacher not want to teach you when not as many others attend?
It seems to me like your teacher may be in it for the money.
From my experience, it is more honerable to have a student succeed in the art rather than make a few bucks. I have always gotten more out of my classes when there are fewer people attending.
Sure, he may train you for free to get you to advance faster. But is he doing this so he can put you at a level you are ready for, or is he putting you there so he can make more $?

shorin-ji,

No price is a rip-off if you're satisfied with what you're getting.

Anybody has the freedom to charge whatever they wish. You have the equal right as anybody else not to be able to afford it.

There's nothing that says you should get what you want at a price you dictate.

Rip-off implies the instructor takes money and dosen't return value.

If the instructor charging $168. a month is giving you nothing in return, that would qualify as a rip-off.

But if they push you, give your good quality instruction, no price they charge is wrong, whether you can afford it or not.

A good instructor can't teach everyone, whether they teach for free or for $1,000 a month.

If charging a high rate keeps their classes small and gives them a good standard of living so they teach you better, that can be very justified.

Instructors tend to charge what they wish, whether free or expensive.

For example I've taught for free for 25 years, but I've also paid over $1,000 for one form. And every penny was worth it, it was instruction I couldn't have ever gotten anywhere.

Whether a price is right is your own choice.

Just make sure you're choosing to pay it.

Pleasantly,

Victor Smith

thanks victor, i have thought about it and i have decided i am gunna do whatever i can to get this training. i am only 16 so my parents have offered to pay for half so i just have to work for the rest. ive already earned most of it, just 20$ more to go, then its on to earning next months.
