#131386 - 03/08/05 09:34 AM sparing help!

Ive been studing with my same teacher for a year. and last weekend he brought one of his buddy's from work to do class with us.
this guy was 24 years old and im 15. he's
6'2" and im 5'6". hes also a lot stronger.
any way we got done with basics/ kata and then we started sparing. i was doing well i landed a lot of head shots and some good kicks. but he kept doing this kick were you take your back leg and extend your heel into your opponents thigh or shin. most the time i would change body around it and knock him off balance.but his feet were massive so i couldnt always get around it. he conected one really solid one and im still fillin it a couple days later. so can any one come up with a nother afective counter.
thank you

I've got it!A pokemon episode helped me think of this.If his main attack uses his legs then keep attacking his legs with kicks.Aim for his legs all the time then retreat for a while.Eventually it will slow down his movement and he'll be defenseless,so then go in for the KO.

Great idea!

If your still feeling it the best way to help is by sparibng against him again but do not attack wach him and eventuly a paten will apear if he keeps doing this same kick you shud easaly be able to counter just take your time keep at a distans from him untill you have figuerd out a way to beat this move

yours sencerly LI JIN

play rock, paper, scissors with him if u understand wat i mean. use close range against his kicks, get so close he cant throw any kicks and take him down in a fury of hand strikes.

WHat Li Jin says is correct. You must learn to anticipate his move so that you can counter it while he misses and is tryign to regain balance.

What defender says is wrong - you do not want to go in close agaisnt someone bigger and stronger than you - thats jsut stupid. The only time you would do this is in a sport syle (no punching/grappling) tournament where you have the more efficient kicking advantage due to your relativel shorter leg at close range. In tournaments that promote grappling it is also better to be in close against a taller heaver striker, but like i said only under controlled circumstances.

in general you have to understand that you cannot use the same strategy for every opponent. Your opponent may beb igger, shorter, fster , slower and your strategy should adjsut accordingly.

The best way for a defence is to not be there! So when he dose the kick move to the side or step back a little. Then when he complets the moveyou get close enough so he can't do the kick!

#131392 - 04/07/05 04:24 AM Re: sparing help!

Maybe some kind of floor sweep would yeild good results? It might at least dissuade him from kicks if he thinks you're getting wise to it.

But what the others have said is right. If he uses the same moves, and is predictable, he is definitely defeatable. Don't be intimidated.

#131393 - 04/07/05 05:35 PM Re: sparing help!

There are two ways. I kick is just like any other attack. It has a striaght line or attack. so you can do Two things. more the half of your body so he misses and either ram him with your side or throw in a nice punch. Or you can block it by as the kick is coming up move to either side and rotate the foot away from you. Making him lose his footing and falling down.

I hope that can help. Just a little Aikido for you.
