Because they can then sue you and they'll probably win. Same reason you can't set up a shotgun with a door-activated firing mechanism as a defense.

Hell one burglar was crawling around on someone's roof, broke throught their skylight, hurt himself, sued the homeowner over it, and won.

That's impressive, maybe more of us should start a job in burgulary. I don't get the legal system nowadays, how come criminals can sue their victims when they're intruding on private property? That sort of thing only encourages criminals.

I don't remember where I heard it but there are plenty of similar stories out there - like the jewelry store robber that robbed the place and was running when a cabbie who'd seen the whole thing pinned him to a wall with his cab until the cops got there. Guy sued the cabbie and won cause he got an owie when the car hit him.
