Anytime you ask this question you will get a million answers. I don't belive that there is absolute answer to this question. To be honest, any martial art takes quite a bit of time and training before it would be practical to use for self-defense. If you are worried about your safety I would suggest a basic self-defense course. These courses teach a few simple techniques that are designed to get you out of trouble and allow you time to get to safety. For most people this is more practical then joining a dojo. But, if you are looking to start in a martial art and you want one that is effective. I would encourage you to visit several different schools, and ask the instuctors a lot of questions. Ask them what their focus is (competition, self defense, fitness?) Once you choose a martial art find out about the instuctors certifications. Ask them what organizations they are affilated with and then check out thoses organizations. Make sure they have been around for a while, if they are new, find out who the founder is and what his backround consists of. Good luck
