how long would it take somone to take aikido before they could you it without really thinking about it (just doing it) again a normal attacker? i've taken TKD it it only took me 1 year before i could do it without thinking, but i was wondering with aikido.
please help thanks in advanced

An old Zen story:
A martial arts student went to his teacher and said earnestly, "I am devoted to studying your martial system. How long will it take me to master it." The teacher's reply was casual, "Ten years." Impatiently, the student answered, "But I want to master it faster than that. I will work very hard. I will practice everyday, ten or more hours a day if I have to. How long will it take then?" The teacher thought for a moment, "20 years."

It seriously depends on the student and how hard they work, how many hours they train a day, how good the teacher is and a whole bunch of other factors.
There really is no quick answer

Referring to the story by Dallas....there is more to the story.When the Sensei replied 20 years, the student asked "why when I train twice as much does it take twice as long?"
The moral of the story was the Sensei's answer, "whith one eye on the goal, and one eye of the training it takes twice as long".
The moral is if you are looking for the end result, you can not concentrate on the training now. Don't worry how long, worry about learning technique first, and everything about the technique next.
