Ok Could someone PLEASE explain to me how this "style" is effective. Now granted I only got to see 6-8 matches, but of those matches I did not see one hand strike.

Would the real TKD practioners please stand up!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep. A real lack of applicable hand techniques is an issue, at least to me. But like I've said numerous times on this board, it's a sport. Complete with rules, pad and officals.

But don't take that to mean that someone who has trained for many years cannot take care of them selves. Most of them can, against the average joe. I just believe that there are more effective and efficient way that don't require nearly as much time in training nor the level of physical ability and fitness.

But don't compare apples and oranges. Martial sports and martial arts are two differnet things.

This *CANNOT* be stated enough times. Olympic TKD and the actually martial art of TKD are two VERY different things.

Grandmaster Joon Jae Lee (the founder of our style of TKD) Is actually changing a lot of what we do to "get away" from being associated with Olympic TKD--going so far as to not even calling our style tae kwon do anymore. This, coming from a man who trained under Gen. Choi. To me, that says a lot. The politics in TKD are endless. But, I digress...

I respect WTF/Olympic TKD a great deal (damn fine KO on the clip I saw), but people coming to the TKD forum here have to maybe get a bit more educated about TKD in general before saying what is and isn't effective.

Olympic TKD is only a facet of Tae Kwon Do, by itself it does not train for self defense. Think of it like a specialized forms competition, not very practical, but demonstrative of incredible capabilities, I mean those kicks and fluidity and timing are certainly going to help you achieve athleticism and a wider range of performance.

hi,

im a tkd referee in my country. hand strikes in olympic tkd are not considered as point unless the opponent falls due to impact of your punch, which is highly unlikely as u cant raise it higher than yr ear.
points are scored using your foot from ankle down.
