My school Black Belt fee is $150.

Colored belts are $35, and there's 10 of them.

Annual membership fee for our association - $9.00

I'm feeling that's a pretty decent value.

As for the essay test. Personal thing? Okay. I'll leave it at that. We all have our own personal things, so I understand where you are coming from.

11 belt levels before black? What "federation" do you train under?. All I can say is WTF is 10.

Nop fed.eration

I didn't pay for my black belt. I earned it.
The only money you shold have to pay is if you are getting some sort of certification of rank through any org. Kukkiwan is out of Korea, so it's gonna be expensive, but you'll get a little card with your pic and name on it!

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this forum.

Yes, I believe that the Black Belt testing fees are outragous, especially here in So Cal. I have spoken to other parents about their fees and it seems at par with my son's studio.

His fee was $480 for his 1st Poom Certification (incl. certificate, ID card, belt w/his name and school), PLUS 3 or 4 private lessons at $80- each (or as they put it, "exam preparation" classes) were mandatory.

Now, he's coming up for his 2nd Poom, but this time for a $580 fee (plus 3-5 prep classes). Part of me says to screw it, but then again my son has invested his time to go to the next level (and tuition) only to quit(?).

I may bite the bullit one last time and have him quit once he gets the 2nd Poom cert in his hands. The Kukkiwon cert is only important to me because if he ever takes up TKD again, no matter what school, he can still retain his belt and rank.

Let me tell you, at the Gracie Academy there is no mass group testing, promotion/testing fees (other that tuition) or any other fees. An individual is only promoted when the instructor see's that they are ready. We all see it everyday in our TKD studios, people being promoted to the next level when thay are clearly NOT ready.

Bottom line, it's a business.

I agree the fees vary quite a bit.

I paid
$190 for my first dan
$290 for my 2nd dan
and $390 for my 3rd dan, the tests were all in from 1990 to 2001 and I understand they have risen since then. We also have to test through Kukkiwon so perhaps this helps a little.

and I only have recieved an actual Kukkiwon certificate for my 3rd dan (I got the ID card as well). But our organization has went through a number of political advancements as our Kwa Jang advanced to 9th dan. But my wife is a 1st dan and did not get a Kukkiwon certificate.
That I think is indicative of the problem with the Korean system.
There was an excellent article link posted on another thread that explains the history of the ranks and of TKD in general that helps to explain the system and its geneology. Here it is

When I took TSD/Tang Soo Do the testing fee was (I don't remember now) somewhere between $50 and $150 because I don't remember it being extreme. But I took it at a 'McDojo' type place so the fee was fairly low. I'm taking TKD now and have a few years from testing for black. So , I'm not sure what the fee is where I'm at. But 500 is pretty extreme...

I read not long ago that the WTF president had misdirected over $3,000,000 in association funds. I wondered how a tae kwon do organization would have a spare 3 million to loose. Now I can see. With those kind of promotion fees multipled by thousands of students they are are making millions. I don't think it is necessary to charge such high fees.
