in judo players wear their belts tied with about six inches past the most other dojos that i have been in the students wear them hanging down to their knees.why?

Rules for the competition gi state that at least 20cm (about 8 inches) must hang below the knot.

I guess some players think that the more belt you have for your opponent to grab... the more he will grab. Thus the short belt.

Some folks just order the wrong size. I don't know why manufacturers don't just tell you the length of the belt in cm.

i under stand the length of (9in ) but why do the karate students wear them so long?

#117646 - 01/03/05 07:17 PM Re: obies(belts)

You know, I never really noticed that. I googled some pics of Karate people and I see what you mean. Most had knee length belts.

I have two theories:

1. Tradition

2. It looks really cool to have your belt flying around when you do a double spinning backside crescent kick. That's why some Chinese MA use sashes. Since most Jodoka would fall down (very nicely and with a loud slap) whilst doing a spinning kick so they just save money by buying a shorter belt. As a bonus someone can not use your belt to choke you.

ever try to grapple with a long belt? it gets in the way.

Might want to also think about the fact that a longer belt works against you while you're grappling. The last thing you need is your opponent using your obi to help pin you...

My theory is that the longer belts stay tied better. Since there is no rule against it, and no practical reason, as with grappling arts, for making it shorter, the longer belt lengths just make since.

May Your Way Be Gentle.
