Hello all,

Was wondering if someone here would tell what the promotion requirements are for different schools of Judo for Kyu and Dan ranks? I'm most interested in Kano Judo, but also others for comparison.

Thank you,

Amos Smith

Thanks Brewer.

This is all I could find:

"Promotion requirements for each rank vary according to the sensei and the national organization that you are affiliated with. There is no worldwide standard for each rank, although it is generally accepted that a blackbelt has had several years of practice and can perform at least the nage-no-kata, the gokyo-no-waza and the grappling techniques. For further information about promotion requirements see your sensei"

Mr. Smith
If you could wait til Aug 1st, and check out our website www.seihokubudokai.org and go the the "Judo" section, I am just about to upload "suggested" promotion requirements as set forth by the U.S. Judo Association of which we are a member!

Thank you, Mr. Hiebert. This is exactly what I was looking for and your sight is nicely done.

The time in years can be a bit deceptive though. In our group, we typically say that practice twice a week is good for maintaining skills where as more that two hours of instruction per week will generally equate to progress. Would you say that this model in on par with the norm? Also, what type of time commitment is involved in the timetable of rank shown on your site?

Thanks again,

Amos Smith

Mr. Smith

Thank you for the nice compliment regarding the website!

The categories listed, as I am sure you saw, indicate both a "Recommended Minimum" and a "Recommended Normal" promotional guideline. That is exactly what it is meant to be....A "Guideline"! You cannot tell in advance that John Doe and Jane Smith will both develop on the same level, "even" if they were to work out at the "exact same" pace or have the "exact same" time in grade. It is simply a given fact that people progress differently. The bottom line is...It is not how many hours you spend training, as much as what you "Learn" while you are doing that training!

I hope that answers your question!

Regards
John Hiebert www.SeihokuBudokai.org
