What are you referring to when you use the term "nightstick"? Got a pick or something.

They are not.

"Nightstick" refers to the conventional staight police baton, whereas the police version of the tonfa is the PR-24.

Of the two, I'd have to say that the ordinary straight baton is the superior weapon.

Incidently, tonfa are banned in Australia, but you can have these:

It's far easier to control, which gives one more versatility in how one may strike with it.

Perhaps, however, wouldn't the unique shape of the tonfa allow for force and momentum to be applied in a more direct manor? Also, I feel the tonfa would hold the advantage in a defensive situation, being that with it's shape it would play off the natural urge to block with the forearm. However, I'll be honest and say I really have no formal marital arts training what-so-ever, and am only stating opinions and theories.
