It's show and tell time, what blades do you own - for display or use? Pictures would be great to see as well.

So nobody wants to to share?

I was inspired to make this post after seeing the blades that my Sensei and a classmate bought at a swordshow recently. They were so interesting that I thought it'd be neat to see what you guys in other arts are using.

I'd post a picture of my gear, but I dunno if my 3 bokuto would be something that anyone would want to see.

You can get a pretty good feel for what folks are using in the the average sword dojo by checking out the following sites. http://www.swordstore.com , http://www.tozando.com , and http://www.bugei.com

You'll never give me a break, will ya Mr. Mahan?

I don't want to know what folks are using in the average sword dojo, I want to know what you use. I want to know what Armed_Man_Piker & laf7773 use. I'm not asking for advice on what to get, my Sensei will help me with that decision when it's time.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a discussion on this board that has nothing to do with ninjas, anime or self-training?

Huh. And I thought I was being helpful too. I wasn't offering you any advice on what to purchase. I was telling you where you could find pics of swords that the majority purchase. My apologies for trying to be helpful. I'll know better next time.

Why exactly should I or anyone else go out of their way to borrow a digital camera, snap a bunch of pictures, find some place to upload the pictures too and then post them here? To satisfy your curiosity? Seems like a lot to ask.

And what exactly did my post have to do with Ninja, anime or self training? Aren't you the guy that started the latest Self Training thread?

Agree with Charles here.

My blade would look pretty much like anyone elses, the difference in actual weight or length would not really show in a picture.

Other than the color of wrapping, saigo (sp) etc one blade would look pretty much like any other.

Not sure that you could even tell a "cutting" blade from a zinc alloy one with a normal scanned pic.

Since most folks are not using individually, specifcally made for them, stright from the forge, blades--they pretty much all look alike.

As odd as it sounds, I don't have a camera, and my little sister lost the roll of film that I did manage to take a few pictures with, so you are left with my pixel art skills

Here's my Angelsword dao

and if I ever get the money, I'll comission my wing blade

Unfortunately, wootz damascus isn't cheap, especially intricate patterns like that, so it may be a few years before I can even get on the waiting list (Angelsword currently has a three year wait on special order damascus Avatars).

This is why I like custom blades, you can show them off.

The photos are not necessary, just welcomed if you have them. If you don't want to take the time to share, that's truly your perogative. If hosting is an issue, feel free to email them to me and I would be happy to host them for you.

I still would like to know more about what the folks here use. I'll bet a lot of blades have a story behind them.

Are you actually reading the posts?

Snipy tone of "if you don't want to take the time to share" would indicate to me that you are not.

I am a Japanese sword stylist, with the exception of handle wrapping, "my" blade would look pretty much like anyone elses.

Again with the exception of the color of the handle wrap and color of the saigo (the weights are bit different, but you can't tell that from a picture) my iaito and my shinken are pretty much the same. Even made by the same folks.

Really kinda boring, made to be used, not placed into an on-line photo gallary.

Alright, I assume you have a picture on your computer.

Now, you need to have this picture hosted on the internet. This is a decent site. Sign up for an account and then log in. Click the "Photos" tab at the top of your screen. From this page, click "upload images". Select the images you want to upload, and hit "upload". This will add the file to their web page. The url to link to this picture is listed below the image.

Now, in the forums, type [ img ] image url [ /url ] (without the spaces in the image links), and vioala, one picture.

Yen, if you truly meant your snippy attitude as a joke, then you are clearly mistaken. It did not come across as a joke. Online there is no body language, no tone of voice. If you act like a git, then people will assume you are a git. If you are trying to be sarcastic, you need to say so. I'll let it pass as you really do appear to be fairly new to forums. And no I do not feel like sharing. Neither of mine look all that different than the pictures at Swordstore.

lol yen, i also have found that charlie has been very negative in his responces. he likes to devaite from the topic itself rather than participate. to get back to your topic, i have quite a few swords in my collection and will post some pics as soon as i can (let charlie be a sook cos he dont have a digital camera lol) but im more than happy to share with a fellow student. as i have mentioned i make swords myself, i also have quite a few reproductions from united cutlery that i got when i was younger, they are nice to look at but thats about it. but for test cutting and practice i have made my own swords (which have been APPROVED by my sensi thankyou charlie, lol) and so far they have proven quite good, stay tuned for pics of these swords. great topic by the way yen, you should be commended.

to cxt, no blade EVER looks like someone elses to the experienced eye, hamon, grain, steel type etc will ALWAYS be different, even from mass produced swords of CRAP quality, lol

Ah, kinda my point, viewing the differences in hamon, to actually get a REALLY good view requires a REALLY good pic, then a REALLY good scan.

And I truthfully don't have the time or inclination to scare them up.

So yes, without a quality pic and scan, those details would not "really" be all that noticable.
And even if you saw good one, that would tell you nothing about the real vaule of a blade, its weight, its balance etc.

At best you could look at its hamon and go "ooh" and "aahh"--and it still would not do justice to the blade--kinda need to see it in person for that.

I train with these items, don't stare longingly at them like some kind of anime fanboy.

For someone posting about "experinced...eyes" you don't seem all informed about swords.

Ok, chaps time out. Surely the tone of these posts does nothing but disservice to this forum.I think the actual topic is far too tame to inspire such strength of responses.
Yen, people are going to be a tad defensive when it comes to divulging info on a cracking good shinken. They are v.expensive and prized possessions. Its kind of like asking a stranger on line to tell you what jewelry they keep at home.It can sound alarm bells in less trusting minds.
Those who gave 'edgy' responses, maybe cut some slack eh? this is a community of people with a shared interest/love, lets try and remember that
In this spirit, I offer details of my humble blade. I own, train with, and love a paul chen practicle plus katana. It has many critics- I dont care. I have very limited means, and when my instructor moved me on to live blade training I had to use the Dojo loan sword during lessons. I love iaito and my enthusiasm was impossible for my family to ignore. On my 30th birthday, I was presented with my katana, purchased and given with love from my parents.I am not ashamed to say i cried.
I hope one day to own a lighter, stronger better balanced and alltogether more 'Hanzoesque' sword, wont stop me loving the Chen though. At the moment having a 4000 shinken would be like a learner driver owning a Maclaren F1.
Happy times to All. Cord.

Hey samurai, Checked out your pix. Very cool.
I.m sure there are a fair few people who read this forum who like there paul chens, but are nervous about contributing because they fear being criticised or not taken seriously 'cause of their chosen sword.
i believe the art of the sword begins in the mind, then travels through the body, the actual weapon itself is the third and least important factor. If you gave a master a paul chen practical, and me an angelsword, the master would kill me in a second. Better to employ a skilled tradesman with poor tools than an apprentice with the best money can buy.

Try and see it from another standpoint.

Guy posts a request that people don't jump all over, then he gets snide about it.

Several folks offer explanations as to why they are not posting pic of their swords and what we get back is more snide.

(kinda of a fan of snide myself so it does not really bug me--but it was done)

Then a guy that has posted some highly questionable material (and another newbie to boot) decides to get in some licks.

Can you see why folks are not falling all overthemselves to comply?

Then you decide to join in--but you have not posted pics of your sword--you just posted to complain--which you have the right to do of course.

I'm thinking pot and kettle here.

Yeah, but that would have gotten folks killed.

Honey, I sent in one of those "private" pics we took on our last trip.

Well because some guys on line asked for one?

Look it an honor-an HONOR I tell you!!!

Honey!! Put that down! I'm sure that it won't show up all over the web.

Honey PLEASE! PLEASE!!!

If i am correct in taking this statement as directed at me, then may I say how truly unpleasant you seem to be.
It seems to me that if you come across a thread with misguided people on it, and choose to post, it should be in in the hope of enlightening the less experienced, not taking cheap shots from the anonymity of your keyboard. I may be new to sword training, but I assure you my friend i am far from new to life. Your continual derogatory and dismissive tone is something to save for trolls. If you find the conversation on this forum beneath you, may I suggest you spend your free time elswhere conversing with those you deem worthy. You dont seem happy here.

ABSOLUTLY NOT, it was directed at Wall.
The guy whom it was addressed too. And why I was parroting back his words.

Gives me serious pause to think you thought for a minute that it was directed at you.
You have been nothing but helpful. And have done nothing but behave in a polite an upfront manner.

Seriously.

Sorry if I was less than clear.

Again, it was directed SPECIFICALLY and ONLY to Wall, in no way, shape or form was ANY of it directed toward you.

Sorry if I was responsible for any confusion on that point.

That being said, might I suggest that you wait for conformation that the post in question was in fact directed at you prior to taking some shots yourself.

it seems that not only do some people have the time to post bs AS YOU PUT IT, but it also seems that a PARTICULAR someone has the time and inclination for going around to each part of the forum looking for what another particular person posts and just being plain childish towards everything that person says.

cxt,

I apologise for the confusion. The sequence in which the responses came, led to me getting the wrong end of the stick. I apologise for any offence that I, in turn, caused you. pax
Whilst debate is healthy, and i admittedly have no knowledge of any possible 'history' between you and Wall, I am making a plea for a happier tone from all on the sword forum.
It is an area of the MA rife with charlatans and missinformation, much of which can be put right here. Many of the people who seem 'closed minded' and frustrating are merely victims of poor teaching and half truth.
In turn I would request that those who have self taught and/or limited experience with swords, please try and coggitate the info available here, rather than just post back as a defensive reaction. To hear one has only to listen.
Respect to all. Cord.
