I suggest cutting down the time between posts to 2 minutes. That seems like a reasonable amount of time to prevent flooding.

I'm a fast reader and typer, I guess, so waiting 5 minutes to post another message seems like an eternity.

Even two minutes is excessive if you compare it to other forums. If flooding is that large of a problem, the admin staff may need to be increased so that troublemakers can more quickly be dealt with.

I agree. I tend to play alot of solitaire when I'm on this forum. If trouble makers are the problem, add more moderators.

I LOVE the 5 minute wait. If you take less than 5 minutes to write your post, you should spend at least 5 minutes re-reading it and making sure you're not coming across as a complete idiot/jerk/whathaveyou.

If your comments aren't worth waiting 5 minutes over, then they're not worth having on the site.

Joel

PS-There's a HUGE reading section on this website, if you don't want to proofread yourself, educate yourself.

I completely agree with JoelM. If more people would take 5 minutes to gather their thoughts before hitting "submit" there may be a lot less misunderstanding and a lot less unreadable posts. Use that time to spell check and think about what you are writing.

If five minutes is too long to wait then what you have to say can't be that important.

You're assuming no one can write a well thought out post in less than five minutes. I assure you that's not the case

Besides, the flood control doesn't address that problem. I just clicked to FightingArts, and am writing this post. There's no five minute delay, so I don't have to spend that time proofreading myself - in other words, the five minute rule doesn't effect the time it takes me to make this post.

This is evidenced by the number of posts we're seeing these days that are 300 words, and only one sentence, or the number of posts we saw recently in the street fighting forum from the kiddies asking us how to beat people up. The 5 minute control didn't even slow them down.

I'm with Shawn C - I read fast, and I write fast. The five minute rule doesn't protect the board from anything, and can really only serve to annoy people.

BTW, it took 3 minutes, 30 seconds to write this post

You weren't here when a troll or two went through almost every section and posted several threads with nothing more than lewd comments and profanity. They were all very short and very close time wise. It took the moderators and admin a while to get rid of them all. Most of the sections had at least three or four threads from these idiots. That is why the flood control was put in place.

You seem to miss the point of my post though. I'm not "assuming" anything and i didn't say a well thought out post couldn't be written in less than 5 min. What i'm saying is for all you "fast readers" out there, slow down. When you are speed reading through posts you may miss something causing you to interpret it wrong. This wrong interpretation could lead to your aggravated disagreement and end up in a big misunderstanding. It happens a lot here even with flood control.

I'll say again. If you can't wait five little minutes to post your comment then it can't be that important. Anything worth saying is worth waiting for.

Due to recent activity in the forums, the delay does not stop the origional idiotic post, but it DOES slow down subsequent posts.

Think about it, Roswell/streetfighter/no friends has to wait 5 minutes before starting another garbage thread, and eventually that's gonna get boring, especially to a troll with a short attention span.
