I have never posted on this forum before, due to the fact that I am not myself a security or law enforcement proffessional. My brother however is. He is a police officer in what I consider a fairly dangerous suburb, of a large city. I, myself, am a BB. I have repeatedly talked with my brother about the need for some, at least basic MA training. He refuses to even consider the idea, and I fear for his safety, when it comes down to a hand-to-hand fight. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get through to him? Thank's in advance for your help.

Common scenario.

If your brother does not think he needs to train and he is a police officer already, there is little you can do to change his mind. He is the one who knows his job. He has training in Use of Force, Arrest Tactics and Weapons as well as experience that you don't so he should be able to make an educated decision to train or not.

I wish I had a better answer but my own experience of training officers has shown that the overwhelming majority of them (95%+) either won't make it a priority or dismiss it completely. One reason why I try to make their mandatory training as effective as I can so at least they have SOMETHING.

Thank's for your reply Fletch1. I had never considered the point you made about my brothers expeience on the street being suprior to mine. Thats something I "know" in my head, but have not really thought deeply about. I guess street fighting is fairly "routine" for him, at least compared to me. I know my brother is tough & more than competent. When it comes right down to it, I quess I just have faith in his ability to assess and deal with bad situations. That, and PRAY! Thanks again. I continue to pray for all those who do this job.

Red,

I didn't necessarily mean superior. He just has experience that you probably don't. Good, Bad or Indifferent, that experience may affect his attitude toward training or seeking info from outside his "circle".

If he has refused to even consider the idea, it sounds like his mind is made up. That's OK too.

Take care.

an idea came to my mind, perhaps you could use his male pride which we all have against him into convincing him into beginning training. perhaps if your ever discussing him taking up MA then you could suggest to him that he is maybe "scared" to try it out.

or

you could just ask him to comedown to one of your classes to ATLEAST try it out
