I cannot find references to this in China.

This is a werid kata.

Apparently, it was taught to palce guards.....and got into Itosu's system via Tomari Te or Matsumura. So it could have even been Goten te, and passed onto a Tomari Pechin or matsumura himself.

Is this commonly practisced in Okinawan Shorin, besides Kobayashi Ryu? Does anyone know the old version? How does it differ from shotokan?

My style practices a kata by that name, but I don't know the origins. My style is shito-ryu.

Mark,

I have long praticed Matsumura Seito and do practice a kata called Matsumura Chinto.

I have seen this practiced in other Shorin styles always with small variances, but more often with very large variances. Seeing it practiced by several different Shotokan schools, there have been times I have asked "What kata was that" as it was totally unrecognizable from the one that I had learned.

(Matusumura) Chinto has several very important concepts/principles. Specific techniques are important, but less so. Although there are large variances in techniques, the majority of Okinawan styles (various Shorin, Goju,Isshin, Uechi) seem to grasp the underlying concepts/principles.I have not noticed this trend in styles that have undergone "Japan-fication". This is only an opinion and as I have obviuosly not observed every style, please accept it for what it's worth, and emper it with your own observations and experience.

No. Chinte. Different Kanji. NOT the kata known in Shotokan as Gankaku.

My mistake. Thanks for the clarification.

As you might surmise, I have no knowledge whatsoever of Chinte. Sorry to have wasted the band-width and your time.
